Defense, special teams lift WVHS past Cougars
The Water Valley Blue Devils (7-2, 2-1) won convincingly Friday night in a very important Region 2-3A game against the South Pontotoc Cougars (4-5, 2-1) as a tenacious defense and well-executed special teams unit were the difference in the 38-14 Blue Devil victory. (October 18, 2010, Page 1B)
Early momentum carries WVHS to victory

WVHS, OHS look to bounce back; LHS heads to Tenn.
After difficult losses a week ago, the Water Valley Blue Devils and Oxford Chargers will be looking to bounce back tonight with home games against South Pontotoc and Hernando respectively.
The Lafayette Commodores, meanwhile, will jump out of region play and travel north to face a difficult Millington Central (Tenn.) Trojans squad.
All kickoffs are set for 7 p.m. Oxford’s game can be heard on 95.5 FM, while Water Valley’s game will be broadcast on 105.5 FM and Lafayette’s on 93.7 FM. (October 15, 2010, Page 6A)
Blue Devils hosting important region game
A week after suffering their first region loss of the year, the Water Valley Blue Devils will look to bounce back at home against undefeated South Pontotoc on Friday night.
South Pontotoc enters the important Region 2-3A matchup in first place and features a veteran offense that has the ability to spread people out and then use a veteran quarterback to make good decisions with the football. (October 14, 2010, Page 6)
Billups passes, catches way to POW honor
Oxford pulled out all the stops in its upset bid at West Point last Friday with Guy Cameron Billups as the trigger man.
Not only did Billups complete 17 of 36 passes for two scores and 291 yards, but he also caught a 9-yard touchdown pass on a trick play that put the Chargers ahead 7-0.
On the Chargers’ final scoring drive of the game that allowed the team a chance to tie the Green Wave, Billups also scrambled for a first down on a 12-yard run.
It’s because of his all-around effort in Oxford’s narrow 22-20 loss that Billups earned this week’s EAGLE Player of the Week honor. (October 12, 2010, Page 8)
Easy to see why Ward is a top target
Friday night it was clear to see why Aberdeen’s Channing Ward is already one of the top recruits out of the state of Mississippi for the 2012 recruiting class.
Ward personifies the phrase “versatile athlete” in virtually every sense of the word.
Against Water Valley on Friday, the 6-foot-4, 230-pound junior lined up all across the defensive line, at tight end and made his presence felt everywhere. (October 12, 2010, Page 9)
Aberdeen takes advantage of miscues
As Water Valley head coach Brad Embry pointed out Friday night, football can be — and often is — an unforgiving sport.
When Water Valley blinked or made a mistake, the Aberdeen Bulldogs pounced and took full advantage en route to a 35-14 victory.

Important region games for all three area teams tonight
Tonight’s area football teams will play important game for determining seeds for the upcoming playoffs. No. 1 Lafayette has an opportunity to further secure a second straight Region 2-4A title with a win over Senatobia at William L. Buford Stadium. Oxford has a great opportunity of finishing first in Region 1-5A if it can defeat West Point on the road, while the Water Valley Blue Devils can remain in first place in Region 2-3A with an upset of Aberdeen on the road.
Kickoff for all three games is set for 7. LHS-SHS can be heard locally on 93.7 FM, OHS-WPHS can be heard locally on 95.5 FM, while WVHS-AHS can be heard on 105.5 FM. (October 8, 2010, Page 6A)
Blue Devils brace for Ward, speedy Bulldogs Friday
It’s hard to talk about Aberdeen without mentioning the words “speed” and “athleticism,” of which the Bulldogs have more than an ample amount.
Last year, on a rain drenched Bobby Clark Field, the Blue Devils found out first hand just how much speed the reigning Class 3A North Half champions had — and still have. (October 7, 2010, Page 7)
