Blue Devils cap successful week with win over Pirates

A week after losing to Yalobusha County rival Coffeeville on the road, the Water Valley Blue Devils defeated the Pirates 59-41 Saturday night at home. The victory improved the Blue Devils to 5-7 overall. (more…) (January 16, 2012, Page 9)

Coffeeville claims rivalry sweep

COFFEEVILLE — Turnovers were at the forefront of Water Valley’s doubleheader loss at county rival Coffeeville on Friday.

Rebels land huge commit in Ward

Newly hired Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze received the biggest boost to his 2012 recruiting class Thursday night when Aberdeen’s Channing Ward picked the Rebels.

The 6-foot-4, 255-pound Ward chose Ole Miss over offers from Mississippi State, Alabama, Auburn and LSU. Ward made his non-binding, verbal commitment during the second quarter of the annual Under Armour All-America Football Game played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., and broadcast live on ESPN. Liggins’ leadership, dedication paced LHS in 2011

There were a lot reasons why the Lafayette Commodores finished the season ranked No. 1 overall in the state and with a second straight MHSAA Class 4A state title trophy to put on display. A bevy of talented players and a very organized coaching staff are at the top of the list of reasons why the Commodores reeled off another 16-0 season, but leadership provided by key players was also a major reason for the immense success. Better second half not enough for WV boys

WATER VALLEY — It was a tale of two halves on the court for the Water Valley Blue Devils Monday night. In the first half of the varsity basketball nightcap in the WVHS gym, Hickory Flat controlled the tempo, the backboards and made more hustle plays to garner a 34-18 lead at the half.

Things were different in the second half for the Blue Devils, and while they ended up losing 61-46, coach John Sherman was more pleased with how his team competed in the second half against the Rebels (8-6 overall). (December 13, 2011, Page 6)

Water Valley wins three games at Pope

Water Valley concluded its middle school basketball season Thursday with three wins over Pope. The seventh-grade girls won 29-4 thanks to nine points from Ally Avant and eight points apiece from KeKe Farrow and Libba Stark. The seventh-grade Blue Devils won 13-10 and were paced by Jack Pritchard’s seven points. The eighth-grade Blue Devils won 29-22 thanks to 14 points from Mark Gooch and eight points from Cooper Clement. The seventh-grade Lady Blue Devils lost 12-4. (December 9, 2011, Page 7A)
