Ole Miss caught the attention of the nation once again last night. Instead of getting beat up for the loss to Jacksonville State, the University drew attention for something else. Ole Miss’ search for an on-field mascot has been a national headline for some time now, and during the Boise State-Virginia Tech game on prime time the Rebels drew attention away from the game approximately a minute with a commercial focusing on Admiral Akbar. No more Mr. Nice Guy for Rebel coach
Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt learned a valuable lesson Saturday afternoon in his team’s 49-48 overtime loss to Jacksonville State: You can’t be Mr. Nice Guy all the time.
There seems to be a sizable portion of Ole Miss fans who believe that Nutt was being a nice host by not running up the score on his former boss, JSU coach Jack Crowe. Whether Nutt intentionally called the dogs off or not, the perception of the fan base is the Rebels coasted in the second half so the Gamecocks wouldn’t be destroyed on the scoreboard.
Letting go of the rope, making the (NFL) cut
Following Saturday’s debacle several of Ole Miss’ players attempted to explain the Rebels’ second-half collapse.
Running back Brandon Bolden may have said it best when he said, “Sometimes you just let go of the rope.”
At the half, the Rebels held a commanding 31-10 lead. Not only was the Ole Miss offense scoring almost at will, but the Rebel defense was thwarting its Football Championship Subdivision opponent’s best efforts to march down the field.

WVHS falls to Wildcats in heartbreaker
CALHOUN CITY —The Water Valley defense did its best to leave Class 2A Calhoun City’s “Boneyard” with a victory Friday, holding athletic QB J.R. Jennings and the Wildcats in check for most of the night, but in the end it wasn’t enough as the Blue Devils fell 10-7. (more…) (September 4, 2010)

What you’ll find in today’s EAGLE, plus one man’s prep poll
The last 24 hours have been quite busy for the Ole Miss football program. Instead of focusing solely on the season-opener against Jacksonville State, the Rebels were dealt the news yesterday that quarterback transfer Jeremiah Masoli’s waiver was denied by the NCAA. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Rebels will also be without senior defensive end Kentrell Lockett in the season opener because of a heart issue. (more…) (September 1, 2010)
