WR Treadwell to announce Thursday

Laquon Treadwell, the nation’s top wide receiver prospect, is closing in on his decision. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Illinois native will make his verbal pledge public at a ceremony Thursday evening at his high school. His mother, Tami Treadwell, confirmed the announcement date and time during a phone interview Monday night.

Ole Miss, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are the three finalists vying to sign the Crete-Monee High standout who was named the Chicago Tribune Player of the Year this past season. Treadwell, who caught 81 passes for 1,424 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2012, is coming off an official visit to Oklahoma State last weekend. (January 15, 2013, Page 6)

WR Cavil flips Rebels for Cal; JUCOs about to sign

Ole Miss’ recruitment of wide receivers for the 2013 football signing class produced the most news over the weekend.

After expressing his desire to play for coach Hugh Freeze in an interview Thursday night, San Antonio wide receiver Dannon Cavil (6-foot-5, 205-pounds) decided an offer from California and new coach Sonny Dykes was better suited for him Saturday afternoon. An in-home visit from Sonny Dykes, Cal’s recently hired head coach, didn’t sway wide receiver Dannon Cavil from his commitment to Ole Miss.

Grenada’s Bledsoe paying attention to Rebels’ class

COLUMN: Ole Miss’ success on the recruiting trail isn’t exclusively tracked by fans. Current verbal commitments for the 2013 football recruiting class are keeping up with what coach Hugh Freeze and his staff are achieving in the days leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 6, 2013.

One of those commits that is interested in how the rest of the class shakes out is Grenada athlete Trey Bledsoe (6-foot-2, 185 pounds). Bledsoe chose to play for the Rebels well before the 2012 season started, before Freeze’s offense started to make stars out of Bo Wallace — this year’s Conerly Trophy Award winner — and wide receiver Donte Moncrief, Wallace’s main target this season.
