Oxford’s Kendricks wins UK Invitational
Oxford High standout pole vaulter Sam Kendricks continued to shine during the indoor season over the weekend by winning the University of Kentucky High School Invitational with a leap of 15 feet, 6 inches.
Kendricks’ latest performance landed him No. 17 in the nation according to dyestate.com. The mark sets a new record in the state of Mississippi from an indoor standpoint. According to OHS coach Scott Kendricks, the competition came to an exciting climax when Sam cleared the 15-6 attempt and another vaulter, Nikita Kirillov failed to clear the height. Prep standout takes offer he can’t refuse
While Ole Miss’ Gridiron Rebels were busy making headlines last week with their strong in-state signing class, the Diamond Rebels quietly added a verbal commitment from Madison Central left-handed pitcher Zach Irwin.
Although Irwin’s step parents are Mississippi State supporters, the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder said Ole Miss recruiting coordinator Carl Lafferty made him an offer he couldn’t refuse and as a result, he decided to give his verbal commitment to the Rebels last Friday.
Because baseball teams are allotted just 11.7 scholarships to distribute amongst 27 players on a 35-man roster — each of the 27 scholarship players must have at least .25 percent of a scholarship — the amount in which a recruit is offered is a big deal, unlike in sports like football and basketball where student athletes are awarded full scholarships. Oxford’s Kendricks signs with Ole Miss
A career of hard work and the constant drive to reach even greater heights has resulted in another new opportunity for Oxford High’s Sam Kendricks. The standout pole vaulter, who won the state championship this past season and recently ascended to No. 15 in the nation in the demanding event, was rewarded with his consistent progression with a scholarship from Ole Miss and track coach Joe Walker. Kendricks signed with the Rebels on Wednesday, the earliest a Charger has ever signed a track offer in school history.
