Lafayette’s eighth-grade football team earned wins over South Panola and Olive Branch Thursday night.
Eli Murphree shined for the Commodores in the 12-6 win over South Panola and the 18-0 win over the Conquistadors.
He scored on a 32-yard run and a 21-yard run in the win over the Tigers and then scored three touchdowns on runs covering 10-, 40-, and 1-yards in the win over OBHS.
The defense was also credited with solid overall play, including nose tackle Austin Arrington and Jakai Ivy at middle linebacker. (April 16, 2010, Page 8a)

Not a lot went right for the Lafayette Lady Commodores softball team on the scoreboard Thursday against DeSoto Central.
In the 15-4 loss, the Lady Commodores were unable to keep the Lady Jaguars off the basepaths and in turn were also unable to get a consistent supply of hits, resulting in the lopsided loss.
According to Lafayette coach Cay Papagolos, the game was more about pushing her team in the non-district showdown than it was anything else.
Papagolos said she scheduled the game against DeSoto Central in an effort to challenge her team and get the most out of her players. (April 16, 2010, Page 8a)
FISHIN’ WITH CHICK — Gail Arrington, long time and much beloved secretary at Lafayette High School, once asked my mother how she was able to raise eight children and spoil each one of them. She did spoil us, but she was not afraid to discipline us. My mother was not the type to use the discipline tactic, “Wait until your father gets home,” because she felt quite capable of handling the task at hand. Even though my mother handled a discipline situation when my father wasn’t at home, there was never any doubt who the boss was at Route 6, Box 9. When my father spoke, he commanded attention throughout our home as well as the entire community of Denmark. (April 16, 2010, Page 9a)
