The win exorcised demons that had been with the Chargers for over a year.
Prior to the game at Bobby Holcomb Field, it was obvious the players were focused on gaining atonement from last year’s 31-13 loss and it showed on the field. (August 30, 2010, Page 1B)
Lafayette, now 2-0 heading into its annual Crosstown Classic showdown with Oxford, scored on its second play from scrimmage and on its last play of the first half (that capped an 11-play, 91-yard drive) in building a 35-0 lead that allowed coach Anthony Hart to sit many of his starters in the second half and work on building depth. It was just a week ago that first-year Kentucky coach Joker Phillips had to make the toughest decision of his short tenure. After evaluating two scrimmages and countless hours of practice the first two weeks, Phillips decided that senior Mike Hartline would be the starting quarterback when the Wildcats take on Louisville in the season opener.
Hartline has the most overall experience at the spot, but sophomore Morgan Newton, the player that pushed Hartline the most during practices, was 5-3 as a starter last year when Hartline went down with an injury. In the end, Phillips likes his depth at the quarterback spot, one of the strength areas on the team. (August 30, 2010, Page 3B)
