SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — The coaching salaries for the biggest coaching names at Ole Miss were approved last month by Mississippi’s Institute for Higher Learning Board of Trustees. (more…) (November 19, 2010)
Facing a team that has four returning starters from a year ago and seven letter winners, Ole Miss (2-1 overall) was able to take the lead several times only to see Arizona (3-0) come back and go ahead for good with 16.7 seconds left Soana Lucet’s layup. (November 19, 2010, Page 6A)
Ole Miss and LSU may be one the same side of the standings in the Southeastern Conference, but that’s about the only thing the two schools have in common heading into Saturday’s annual “Magnolia Bowl” meeting at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.
The Rebels are 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the SEC after falling 52-14 on the road at Tennessee last weekend and in desperate need of some good fortune to finish the regular season. (November 19, 2010, Page 6A)
A balanced scoring ledger for both the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers basketball squads ended up leading to home wins over Coldwater Thursday night. Oxford’s boys defeated Coldwater 83-55 to improve to 5-1 on the year, while the Lady Chargers played another great team game in a 68-63 win. (November 19, 2010, Page 7A)
Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy wanted to see where his team was early in the season by scheduling tough opponents. Just three days after the Rebels opened the year with a hard-fought win over Arkansas State, they made a statement Wednesday night with a 77-61 win over Murray State at C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum.
The victory was impressive for several reasons. Ole Miss (2-0 overall) continued to show its ability to guard teams and rebound well as a collective group while also shooting well from the free-throw line.
Wednesday’s win also came over a team that won 31 games last season and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, a place the Rebels want to be later this season. (November 18, 2010, Page 6)
Cool, calm and collected. That’s what Oxford senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups has been this season on the gridiron for the Chargers.
At a program where good passing quarterbacks have been plentiful over the years, Billups has taken aim at all of the school records and not only been able to duplicate the success of a Matt Malouf or Chad Hill or Mike Stark, but surpass all of them in terms of stats. (November 18, 2010, Page 7)
Fans of area high school sports should expect to see some new teams to route against after the Mississippi High School Activities Association officially released the reclassification of schools for the 2011-2013 seasons Wednesday. Classifications are based on the student enrollment of each school that was reported with the State Department of Education Finance and Statistic Division in October.
Lafayette, Oxford and Water Valley all stayed in the same classifications (5A, 4A, 3A), but there were teams that the three schools have been playing that either moved up or down. Lafayette’s enrollment was listed at 690, making it the fifth-biggest school in 4A. Oxford listed an enrollment of 887, a figure that places them in the middle of 5A, while Water Valley has an enrollment of 354, a figure that also places them more in the middle of the 3A field. Lafayette’s drive to win an MHSAA Class 4A state championship this season will continue on the road Friday night at New Albany.
The third-round playoff game will be the Commodores’ first away from William L. Buford Stadium. A capacity crowd is expected to fill up the stands and the surrounding area, while the atmosphere should be as intense as any game LHS played in during last year’s playoff run. Just moments after the Oxford lost to West Point 22-20 during the regular season, Chargers coach Johnny Hill told his team that he thought they would see the Green Wave again in the playoffs and at home no less.
His prediction ultimately came true as the Chargers (9-3 overall) host the Green Wave (11-1) in an important second round Class 5A playoff game at Bobby Holcomb Field Friday night. (November 18, 2010, Page 7)
