LHS teams fare well in 4A meet
Lafayette wrapped up successful seasons on the track Monday with two top five finishes for the Commodore and Lady Commodore teams in the MHSAA Class 4A meet held at Pearl High School.
Lafayette’s boys garnered 44 points to finish in third place out of 33 teams, while Lafayette’s girls scored 47.50 to finish fourth out of 27 teams in the field. (May 19, 2010, Page 7)
Oxford Rebels take Tupelo Tournament
The Oxford Rebels, the traveling 9-year-old baseball team, recently won the Mississippi Select Baseball Tournament in Tupelo.
LeGrand honored by Holmes Community College
Former Lafayette High standout D.J. LeGrand won the Most Improved Award this season from Holmes Community College for his standout season on the men’s basketball team. LeGrand helped the Bulldogs make the MACJC state tournament this season. (May 19, 2010, Page 7)

Devils’ unity shows up Monday
Team unity and earning wins as a collective group, rather than relying on one player to capture a victory each game, has been a big point of emphasis for the Water Valley Blue Devils this season.
A strong foundation of playing together has been in place ever since coach Doug Robbins took over the team six seasons ago, but this year’s team may take that mindset to a whole different level.
Water Valley’s advancement to the MHSAA Class 3A state baseball championships Monday didn’t just happen, it was built on a season filled with caring and sharing and dedication to one another. The bond amongst the team was never more visible than just before the top of the sixth inning started in Monday’s 7-6 win over Booneville in the 3A North Half title game. (May 18, 2010, Page 8)

Rebels add Short, announce Riley’s departure
The Ole Miss men’s basketball team added another piece to its 2010-11 roster with the signing of 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward Steadman Short from Chipola College (Marianna, Fla.), head coach Andy Kennedy announced Monday.
The frontcourt addition is a rising junior with two years of eligibility left after he spent his sophomore season at Chipola and his freshman year at High Point University (High Point, N.C.). (May 18, 2010, Page 10)
Abram’s autopsy released
A coroner says complications of sickle cell trait caused the death of Bennie F. Abram, a Ole Miss football player who collapsed during a Feb. 19 workout.
Officials released the autopsy results Monday for Abram, a 20-year-old junior from Southaven.
Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy said the official cause of death was the sickle cell trait associated with exertion.
Kennedy said a contributing factor was that Abram had an enlarged heart.
Kennedy said a person with sickle cell trait inherits one gene for sickle hemoglobin and one for normal hemoglobin. The condition can be asymptomatic. However, Kennedy said Abram knew he had sickle cell trait. (May 18, 2010, Page 10)
