Rogers Q&A postscript
SPORTS EDITOR BLOG — Last Friday, I wrote a feature story on retiring Ole Miss Associate Athletics Director for Media Relations Director Langston Rogers. The story had a lot of interesting quotes and information, but unfortunately because of space, I was unable to get our entire 25 minute conversation into the paper. Patton has emerged as top-flight pitcher
A confident, and consistent approach has helped the Lafayette Commodores win over a dozen games the last half of the season, but it’s also been a formula for success for one of the team’s top pitchers.
Junior right-hander Jarrett Patton has transformed himself from the Commodores’ starting shortstop into the team’s top starter by maintaining his laid-back attitude throughout the game as well as a consistent approach to getting batters out each inning. (May 6, 2010, Page 6)
Diamond Rebels add three more to class
The Ole Miss baseball team’s signing class recently got a bit more crowded.
On Wednesday, the Rebels announced the signing of three players to its 2010 signing class.
Pitchers R.J. Hively and Weston Hoekel, in addition to shortstop Blake Newalu, will join a class that already boasts 11 players. (May 6, 2010, Page 6)
Chargers, Lady Chargers honored
Part of what makes Oxford High School athletics special is the amount of athletes that transcend boundaries and play multiple sports.
Over the course of the past 17 years, Oxford has won 13 Class 4A All-Sports Awards. On Tuesday, Oxford presented its athletes with various awards recognizing them for their accomplishments. (May 6, 2010, Page 7)
Spinners top Volleys in finale
The Oxford Park Commission’s junior team tennis season came to an end Wednesday with the Volleys defeating Spinners 4-1. Gus Morgan won the lone singles match for the Volleys, defeating Ally Shinall 8-2. (more…) (May 6, 2010, Page 7)
White remains in NBA Draft
Ole Miss guard Terrico White had a decision to make on whether to keep his name in the NBA Draft selection process or come back to school for his junior season. With Saturday’s deadline to declare one way or another approaching, White decided he would forgo his remaining college eligibility and stay in the draft. (May 6, 2010, Page 7)
Rebs, Lady Rebs learn NCAA tennis fate
The anticipation is finally over.
On Tuesday, both Ole Miss tennis teams watched from the Indoor Practice Facility as the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournament fields were officially announced.
The men, who rank 18th in the country, are headed to College Station, Texas to participate in the Texas A&M Regional. The Rebels face TCU (12-12 overall) in the first round.
As for the No. 17 Lady Rebels, they learned they’ll be headed to the Georgia Tech Regional in Atlanta for the second-straight year. This time around, they’ll face No. 4 seed UC-Irvine (13-10). (May 5, 2010, Page 8)
Coleman’s hit lifts 11-12 Yankees to win
Richard Coleman helped lift the 11-12 year-old Gilliland Orthodontics Yankees to a 7-6 win over the Oxford Orthopedics Sports Medicine Rays at FNC Park Tuesday night by hitting a walk-off single in the sixth inning. In other Oxford Park Commission youth baseball games from Tuesday, the Bank of Oxford Dodgers beat the McKeeson Orioles 9-6 in the other 11-12 game.
In the 10-year-old league, the Morgan White Insurance Rays beat the Rock Star Taxi Yankees 17-7, while the Hampton Inn Cardinals tied the First National Bank of Oxford Braves 3-3. In two 9-year-old games, the Rainbow Cleaners Yankees beat the Plein Air Royals 10-8, while the Bert’s Plumbing Reds pounded the Larson’s Big Star Red Sox 12-0. In the lone OPC softball game, the Carol Dorsey Cardinals defeated Shiloh Creek Land & Timber 8-7. (May 5, 2010, Page 8)
Chargers confident about chances
Oxford’s run to win a third straight state championship in tennis continues Thursday against a school where the state title match will be played in less than a week.
Ridgeland will be the Chargers’ latest opponent to play in the Class 5A playoffs and Thursday’s match, which begins at 2 p.m., will determine who advances to represent the North in Monday’s 5A state title match. (May 5, 2010, Page 9)
Decision time coming for White
AROUND THE SQUARE AND BEYOND — To stay or not to stay. That’s the big question that has been on the mind of Ole Miss men’s basketball guard Terrico White since he placed his name into the NBA draft a little less than a month ago.
White has been gathering input on whether he’s good enough to be picked in the first round of the upcoming draft since early April and with his school commitments now out of the way, White has been working hard trying to impress NBA brass during individual workouts. (May 5, 2010, Page 9)
