Shiloh Creek nips Cardinals

Lady Chargers capture inspirational first title
The best writer in Hollywood couldn’t have penned a better script or a more appropriate ending to how the Oxford Lady Chargers finished out the 2010 MHSAA Class 5A state meet at Pearl High Friday evening.
After years of doing well and consistently finishing in the top five of the team championships, the Lady Chargers finally broke through to win the school’s first team title. Oxford won Friday’s 5A title by totaling 89 points, the most ever in a state meet, and the Lady Chargers did it with a strong showing in field events as well as an inspirational finish in the 4×400 meter relay. Chargers garner three state champions
Three individual state championships and eight individuals earning All-State honors highlighted the Oxford Chargers’ efforts Friday at the MHSAA Class 5A state meet held at Pearl High School.
On a day where Pearl proved to be too much for any team in the field to defeat as state champions, three individual state titles and a balanced effort that garnered 70 total points and a second-place finish was what the Chargers had to hang their hat on. (May 17, 2010, Page 2B)
Kilcrease, Nelson silence Rebel bats
The Southeastern Conference’s Western Division leader board isn’t any clearer after a weekend that saw No. 15 Ole Miss drop two of three games to Alabama at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
After the Rebels overcame a slew of walks and errors to claim a 5-4 win on Friday, they fell to the Crimson Tide in a 4-1 loss on Saturday and a 6-3 loss on Sunday.
As a result, Ole Miss (36-17 overall, 16-11 in the Southeastern Conference) will head into its final weekend series one game behind Auburn — which took two of three from Tennessee this weekend — for the top spot in the SEC West, and tied with Arkansas, who was swept by South Carolina. Complete game effort lifts WVHS to win
If there was ever a time for senior pitcher Shanquayle Jenkins to record his best outing of the season, it was in Saturday’s must-win Class 3A North Half playoff game against Booneville.
Jenkins logged a complete-game effort in Water Valley’s 8-1 win over the visiting Blue Devils, who will now host the deciding third game of the series tonight at 6 at Harold T. White Field. (May 17, 2010, Page 3B)

Class 4A state track meet to resume today
Rain shortened Saturday’s Class 2, 4 and 6A meets at Pearl High School. The meets were scheduled to resume today at 2.

Rebels drop Game 3 at Alabama

Nelson stifles Ole Miss’ bats in 4-1 win
TUSCALOOSA — What a difference a year can make. Last year, Alabama pitcher Jimmy Nelson was the goat on Friday night for the Crimson Tide, blowing a two-run lead in the ninth to lose 8-7.
Fast-forward a year, and it’s hard to believe Nelson could have pitched any better.
On Saturday, the Alabama junior pitched what both he and head coach Mitch Gaspard termed his best outing of the season, silencing Ole Miss’ bats in their 4-1 victory.
