That wasn’t the case on Tuesday night, as the Chargers completed Oxford’s sweep of Clarksdale by defeating the Wildcats 63-57 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. The win advances the Chargers (17-10 overall) to the 5A North Half tournament Friday at Indianola-Gentry, a feat the team did not accomplish last season. (February 16, 2011, Page 6)
Finding additional scorers to complement the attention senior guard Chris Warren draws from opposing defenses has been something Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy has tried to work on all season.
Only fellow senior Zach Graham has consistently scored alongside Warren and is the only other player who is averaging double figures. Against Alabama, Warren was limited to just two made shots from the field and while he ended up scoring 15 points, the lack of help he got against the Crimson Tide prevented the Rebels from even being close until the second half. The memo on the rest of the team must have slipped through the cracks, though, as the Lady Commodores, behind a solid team effort, soundly defeated the Lady Indians 63-38 Tuesday night at the LHS gymnasium in the first round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs. (February 16, 2011, Page 7)
That was never more evident than in 2008, when the Rebels transitioned from Zack Cozart at shortstop to a combination of Sean Stuyverson, Tim Ferguson and Evan Button and the trio committed 27 errors.
The next two seasons, Ole Miss was lucky enough to have Kevin Mort restore order to the position and with any luck, the Rebels are hoping junior college transfer Blake Newalu will be an extension of Mort’s dependability. (February 16, 2011, Page 7)
