The Ole Miss men’s tennis team has been looking forward to the start of Southeastern Conference play for awhile, but first they had to take care of business against a much improved Memphis team. An improved effort wasn’t enough to lift the Water Valley Lady Blue Devils past the defending Class 3A state champion Nettleton Lady Tigers on Tuesday night. The Oxford tennis team got its 2011 season and district play off to a fast start Tuesday with a 7-0 win over West Point on the road. The Chargers had little trouble dispatching the Green Wave thanks to a solid overall performance led by boys singles player Zach Wilder, who defeated Carson Miller 6-0, 6-0. Despite a seven-run fourth inning, the Oxford High baseball team was unable to overcome a fast start by Olive Branch in a 15-10 loss Tuesday night. The Chargers (1-2) got to within a run of the Conquistadors at 3-2 in the top of the third, but they fell behind by 10 runs after Olive Branch scored nine in the bottom half of the frame. OHS was within 12-10 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but was unable to score the rest of the way as Olive Branch tacked on three more runs. (more…) (March 2, 2011, Page 7)
Ole Miss has to be aided by Arkansas and South Carolina this week if things are going to lead to a No. 2 seed, but the most important thing the Rebels have to do is defeat Auburn Wednesday and the Razorbacks on Saturday in order for any of those other scenarios to matter. (March 1, 2011, Page 8)
Nick Hollis and Neil Chandler combined for seven goals to lift the Under-12 Galaxy past the Tornados 9-5 in Oxford Park Commision youth soccer action Monday night. In the other U-12 boys game, Cole Calhoon netted all five of the Earthquake’s goals in a 5-0 victory over the Wizards. In the U-12 girls division, United tied the Crew 1-1 and the Tornados defeated the Galaxy 2-1.
In the U-10 boys division the Tornados wrapped up the Sounders 4-3 and the Wizards topped the Crew 3-2.
In the U-10 girls division, United snuck past the Galaxy 2-0 and the Earthquake beat the Crew 3-1. (March 1, 2011, Page 8)
