Oxford hosts Grenada in season opener
Speed is something the Oxford Chargers are going to have to deal with when they host Grenada Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field.
While first games are always the hardest for coaches to scout for, the one thing that has been consistent in preparing for Grenada is the amount of speed it has at the skill positions.
Leading the way from a skill standpoint is Cedric Tillman, who was second in Class 6A in the 100 meter dash this past spring. The 5-foot-11, 187-pound senior leads a talented backfield for coach Lamar Pitcock, who turned was able to improve Grenada from a 1-10 team in 2008 to a 5-6 team last year. (August 19, 2010, Page 6)
Blue Devils play host to former division rival
The players on the Water Valley football team have spent the last three weeks not only battling each other, but the Mississippi heat in preparation for tomorrow night when they host the Bruce Trojans at Bobby Clark Field beginning at 7:30.
The Trojans, which used to be in Water Valley’s region prior to the most recent reclassification, will provide a variety of challenges to the Blue Devils. (August 19, 2010, Page 6)
Rebels’ D takes a toll on quarterbacks
Ole Miss’ football practice on Tuesday was one dominated by the defense and the rain. Shortly after the punting and place-kicking work was completed, heavy rain and wind forced the action inside. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said the offense and defense ran 80 plays and did everything but tackle to the ground.
The Rebel defense, led by players such as defensive end Kentrell Lockett, forced several mistakes by quarterbacks Nathan Stanley, Jeremiah Masoli and Randall Mackey during the practice. (August 18, 2010, Page 8)
Cab driver apologizes to Rebels’ Kennedy
Ole Miss basketball coach Andy Kennedy settled a defamation lawsuit Tuesday with a cab driver and a valet stemming from a dispute over a ride in the downtown district of Cincinnati in December, 2008.
Details of the settlement are confidential as attorneys told Judge Melba Marsh in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court that they had reached an agreement. According to a source, Kennedy did not pay cab driver Mohamed Jiddou, or valet Michael Strother a monetary settlement as some papers reported today. (August 18, 2010, Page 8)
Apology allows Kennedy to finally move forward
Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy finally heard somebody else say they were sorry in public.
For the past 20 months, since his now famous entanglement with a cab driver and the police in Cincinnati, Kennedy has been on the losing end of a story that has now ended the way Kennedy was hoping it would, with an apology. (August 18, 2010, Page 8)
Alexander shows experience in win
A year ago Ivory Alexander was still finding her way on Oxford High’s volleyball court, still adapting to her teammates and coach Tara Ross’ style.
Against Senatobia at the OHS gym on Tuesday, Alexander’s maturity and athleticism made the difference as the Lady Chargers picked up a 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-12, 25-19) victory.
The junior didn’t just rack up an abundance of kills or blocks, but she helped her team in a number of ways, finishing the match with four kills, two digs and four aces. (August 18, 2010, Page 9)
Oxford players shine in recent tourney action
Over 100 players from four different states competed in a successful junior tennis tournament hosted by the Oxford Park Commission and Oxford Community Tennis Association.
Included in those numbers were 38 players for Oxford who helped make the tournament a big success. (August 18, 2010, Page 9)
Rebs’ Pomeranz signs late-night deal
It went down to the final minutes, but Ole Miss pitcher Drew Pomeranz is now a professional baseball player.
Just before Monday’s midnight EDT deadline, the All-American pitcher signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians organization.
According to the Associated Press, the contract includes a $2.65 million signing bonus, which is just over the Major League Baseball suggested slot price for the No. 5 player ($2.52 million). (August 17, 2010, Page 6)
FAMU to introduce Horne as AD today
The dream of becoming an athletics director has finally become a reality for Derek Horne. The former Ole Miss basketball player will officially be introduced as the AD for Florida A&M today at 1:30. Horne, who has worked at Ole Miss for the past 15 years and was most recently the senior associate AD for external affairs, said he was excited about his new role at the Tallahassee, Fla., based school. Looking for hangtime
Tyler Campbell has a big-league leg.
He proved that last season when he bombed a punt 71 yards against Alabama, forcing one of the top returners in the country, Javier Arenas, to double back from his original spot. That was just one of the many impressive kicks that led the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder to be considered one of the top punters in the nation with a 43.95 yards per punt average that ranked 12th in the country.
His robust average, which was helped by nine punts of over 50 yards, earned him a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team.
With regards to the upcoming season, Campbell can still improve. (August 17, 2010, Page 6)
