Chizik not expecting sophomore slump
Gene Chizik made a statement in his first season as head coach of Auburn. He took a program that had surprisingly grown stale on offense under Tommy Tuberville and turned it into a more dynamic, cutting edge group. The end result of installing a fast-paced, spread offense was an 8-5 overall record and a win over Northwestern in the Outback Bowl.
The Tigers amassed a school-record 5,613 yards on offense last year under Chizik, a coach known more for his defensive ability, and the hope this year is even better results.
There is no question that the offensive philosophy of coordinator Gus Malzhan can produce results, the bigger question now lies on defense and it’s ability to stop teams. If the Tigers can improve on defense where five of the team’s top tacklers return, then they may have a legitimate shot of winning the Southeastern Conference Western Division title. Regents plays in jamboree
The junior varsity team at Regents School of Oxford played well in recent district jamboree action in Tunica.
Coach Craig Daniel said the effort of the team was very good and have shown improvement throughout the summer. The junior varsity team has a week off to regroup before the season starts. The Regents’ Pee Wee team begins action Saturday with a jamboree game at Marshall Academy in Holly Springs. (August 25, 2010, Page 10)

Clarity with OM QBs expected today
Today’s football practice at Ole Miss is expected to bring a bit more clarity to the battle to become the starting quarterback against Jacksonville State in the season opener next week.
Both Nathan Stanley and Jeremiah Masoli performed well in the final scrimmage of the preseason camp held last Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Stanley missed just one pass (10-for-11) during his time under center and out of the shotgun and also added a 25-yard touchdown run once the team started red zone work. (August 24, 2010, Page 6)
Leadership, production lead to POW honor
It may be a new season, but it’s the start of what could be the same old story — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Lafayette’s Jeremy Liggins took home the season’s first EAGLE Player of the Week honor after leading his Commodores past Cleveland 48-12 on Friday night.
Not only was Liggins effective through the air, completing 9 of 15 passes for 117 yards, but he also rushed for 140 yards and three scores on just 10 carries. (August 24, 2010, Page 6)
Mallett key to Arkansas’ big-picture hopes
If the Arkansas Razorbacks are going to make a run at winning the Southeastern Conference Western Division title, then quarterback Ryan Mallett is going to have to be 100 percent healthy.
Mallett missed all of the spring due a broken foot and while he appears to have recovered from the injury, he’s also been limited at times during the first two weeks of summer drills. Mallett shined in Arkansas’ Thursday scrimmage throwing for 475 yards and five touchdowns, while in the team’s most recent scrimmage held Saturday, Mallett threw touchdown passes to tight end D.J. Williams and wideout Joe Adams. The belief from many is he’s healthy enough to help lead the Razorbacks to the SEC title game for the first time since the 2006 season. From wide receiver Greg Childs’ standpoint, Mallett is throwing the ball like he has in the past. (August 24, 2010, Page 6)
Lady Rebs answer questions with scrimmage
Ole Miss volleyball hosted its first full preseason scrimmage on Saturday at the Gillom Sports Center and head coach Joe Getzin was not disappointed with what he saw.
“I thought we had a good outing,” he said. “Anytime you split the team it’s pretty difficult to get a true indication, but I thought there was points of intensity that show the potential of the team.
“I’m sure they’re excited to play against somebody else instead of beating each other.” (August 24, 2010, Page 7)

Rebel QBs make case for No. 1 role in scrimmage
A difficult decision on which quarterback to start in the season opener against Jacksonville State is what Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt and his offensive staff is currently facing after Saturday’s “Meet the Rebels” scrimmage.
Both Nathan Stanley and Jeremiah Masoli performed well in front of an estimated crowd of 9,000 fans at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Stanley was red-hot from a passing standpoint as he completed 10 of 11 throws for 117 yards. Stanley didn’t throw a touchdown pass, but he did have a 25-yard touchdown run once the offense started working on situations inside the red zone. (August 23, 2010, Page 1B)
Fast start leads to one-sided win for OHS
Coach Johnny Hill wanted to see his Oxford Chargers get off to a good start in their season opener with Grenada. Hill got exactly what he wanted Friday night as Oxford scored on its second play from scrimmage, its first two possessions and five of its first six possessions en route to a 41-12 victory over Class 6A Grenada at Bobby Holcomb Field.
Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups sparked the quick start, completing his first pass for a touchdown and going 6-for-10 for 148 yards and three scores as OHS raced out to a 28-0 lead in the opening quarter. Billups, who hooked up with six different receivers in the game, finished 10-for-19 for 213 yards.
The Oxford defense, meanwhile, shut down the potentially explosive visitors in the first half and for all but two possessions the entire night. Grenada managed just two first downs and 37 total yards in the first half; for the game, GHS gained 10 yards on the ground and 141 overall. (August 23, 2010, Page 1B)
