The Bert’s Plumbing Red finished the Oxford Park Commission’s 9-year-old league season with a perfect 12-0 record and become one of four teams to win a championship in 2010.
The First National Bank Braves finished with an 11-1 record to win the 10-year-old league title this summer, while the Chandler Nissan Cardinals and Hunter’s Hollow Inc. The Oxford Rays 13-and-under traveling baseball team concluded its season recently with a third place finish at the June Jam USSSA NIT Tournament held at Southaven.
In the tournament, the Rays (16-11-2 overall) went 3-1 in the 14-team tournament and were eliminated in the semifinals.
The Rays claimed the first three games, defeating the Strike Zone Stixx 6-3, St. Louis Hawks 9-4 and DeSoto Cardinals 3-2, before falling to the Tupelo Rangers 6-1. (June 29, 2010, Page 9)
The Oxford Fury, a girls select soccer team, will be holding tryouts July 13 from 6:30-8 p.m. and again on July 20 from 6:30-8 p.m. at FNC Park’s soccer fields. Registration is at 6 p.m. Players should take a size four ball, water, cleats, shin guards and soccer socks.
Players must be 12-years-old or younger prior to July 21, 2010. Players also must register with the Oxford Park Commission’s Under-12 girls league.

The 12-and-under Oxford Legends’ season came to an end on Friday, as the traveling baseball team was defeated by the Mississippi Knights 8-2. The loss eliminated the Legends (13-13 overall) from the USSSA State Tournament in Tupelo.
Legends pitchers Christopher Sandroni of Oxford and Parker Caston of Cleveland surrendered just five hits, but six walks and three Oxford errors were too much to overcome.
Bryant King of Bruce had two hits and Dee Fair of Oxford tripled and scored a run for the Legends.
The Legends ended the tournament with a 1-2 record. (June 28, 2010, Page 6)
NFL player Terrance Metcalf wants all youth to learn the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Metcalf, founder of the Metcalf-Holden Outreach Foundation, wants to enhance the growth and development of children by providing a positive atmosphere through recreational activities.

Lafyette’s Josh Mills and Jarrett Patton will join Oxford’s Luke Gibbs on this year’s District 2 All-Star team that will compete in the annual State Games of Mississippi next week.
The three area players were selected to join 15 other players from the Northwest Mississippi area after having a successful tryout on June 2 at NWCC.
The team will be coached by Olive Branch’s Chris Chambliss, while the annual tournament begins Thursday and runs through June 27 at Meridian Community College.
