New faces stand out for Diamond Rebels on first weekend

Getting used to new faces and making adjustments will headline most of Ole Miss’ fall ball season, which began this past week.

“It was a good weekend and a good start,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. “There’s a lot of new faces and a lot of the new guys did well.”

Included on Ole Miss’ current 38-man roster are 20 new players.

Of those players, corner infielder/outfielder Preston Overbey may have made the best first impression on Bianco. (September 20, 2010, Page 3B)

Blue Devils hold on to top Vikings

A convincing 21-point halftime lead wasn’t enough on Friday for the Water Valley Blue Devils.

As a result, it took a late touchdown run by senior Zenty Allen for the Blue Devils to hold onto a 27-21 victory over North Pontotoc at Bobby Clark Field. (September 20, 2010, Page 5B)

‘Dores learn lessons in latest win

Two valuable lessons about being prepared at the start of a game and not underestimating an opposing team were the big things the Lafayette Commodores took away from their 42-24 win over Center Hill Friday night.

A slow start by the normally reliable LHS defense resulted in 17 first-half points for the Mustangs, while the overall execution of the Commodores, a group that usually has no trouble putting teams away early, was only enhanced for the future.

For coach Anthony Hart, the win, which improved the Commodores to 5-0 on the year overall and 1-0 in Region 2-4A play, turned out to be a good test for his team. (September 20, 2010, Page 4B)

The Commodores and the Rebels: More than 11 decades of history

Local historian Jack Lamar Mayfield takes a look back at the Ole Miss-Vanderbilt football series, writing about the first few meetings between the two schools and then taking a look at a notable 1947 meeting when John Vaught’s Rebels overcame an early-season loss to the Commodores to win the Southeastern Conference championship. (September 17, 2010, Page 4B)

Return to football big for McNeal

A decision to return to the gridiron this season has turned out to be a great thing for both senior wide receiver DeShaun McNeal and the Oxford Chargers.

After not playing football for two seasons, the 6-foot-5 McNeal decided he would give football one more chance. His value to the 3-1 Chargers has been immense, not only from a receiving standpoint, but also from a blocking and defensive standpoint as well. (September 17, 2010, Page 6A)
