The Chargers and Lady Chargers opened District 1-5A play on a good note with a sweep of New Hope on the road Friday night. The Chargers beat New Hope 81-61 thanks to 32 points from Justin Fondren. Oxford High track standout Sam Kendricks set a new OHS indoor pole vault record of 14 feet, 6 inches at the the LSU High School Indoor Invitational Saturday. The previous record was shared both by Joseph Stevens and Kelly Drewery. Kendricks finished third overall in the competition against the most elite vaulters in the nation and he is currently ranked 19th in the nation for all vaulters. Lafayette’s girls basketball team lost its second district game in the same week Friday with a 58-51 setback to Byhalia. Nikki McChristian led LHS with a double-double (11 points and 11 rebounds), while Brianna Fisher had 13 points and five rebounds. (more…) (January 10, 2011, Page 7)
Water Valley’s seventh-grade boys defeated Charleston 12-8 Thursday night to improve to 3-5 on the year. Makedrius Gooch led the Blue Devils with seven points. The seventh-grade girls also posted a win over Charleston thanks to a late steal and layup. The eighth-grade boys lost 14-12 to Charleston. The team was led by A.J. Hawkins’ four points. All four teams will be back in action Monday at home against Charleston starting at 4 p.m. (January 7, 2011, Page 8A)
The Oxford seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball teams had no problem pulling off a sweep of South Pontotoc Thursday night in the teams first action since the Christmas break. The eighth-graders defeated South Pontotoc 48-25 thanks to 13 points from Josh Gibbs, eight points from K.T. McCollins and seven points each from David Dennis and Michael McGhee. McGhee and McCollins each had five blocks in the win for the Chargers, who are now 12-2 overall.
