No. 6 Rangers host Delta for Homecoming
A Homecoming win over Mississippi Delta isn’t the only thing the No. 6 Northwest Mississippi Community College Rangers can gain on Saturday at Bobby Franklin Field.
A win over the Trojans would keep the Rangers perfect in the MACJC North Division at 4-0 and also keep them a minimum of a half game ahead of Northeast, which also plays Saturday at Coahoma, with two games left to play. (October 14, 2010, Page 6)
Rebels to lean on Swindall at ‘Bama
Starting a new center against one of the nation’s best defenses isn’t exactly what Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt would have planned two weeks ago, but it’s the situation he now faces with starter A.J. Hawkins banged up.
Freshman Evan Swindall has been practicing as the team’s new No. 1 center with Hawkins still recovering from an injury suffered against Kentucky.
The 6-foot-3, 295-pound Swindall came in late for Hawkins against the Wildcats and it appears that he will start for the Rebels when they take on No. 8 Alabama in Tuscaloosa Saturday night. (October 14, 2010, Page 7)
Durham’s six touchdowns lead OPC Steelers to victory
Taylor Durham scored six touchdowns to help lead the 6-7 year-old Steelers to a 38-36 win in Oxford Park Commission youth flag football action Tuesday at FNC Park.
In other 6-7 games, the Bears topped the Jets 26-8, the Chiefs nipped the Cowboys 13-12, while the Jags beat the Packers 21-6.
In the 8-9 league, the Steelers beat the Saints 42-19, the Ravens beat the Chiefs 19-13, the Packers edged out the Bears 18-14, while the Raiders blanked Giants 12-0.
In two 10-12 games, the Steelers blanked the Chiefs 25-0, while the Bears shut out the Giants 20-0. (October 14, 2010, Page 7)
Boxing renews Keller’s athletic career
Sports have been a huge part of Jason Keller’s life ever since he was old enough to walk. The former four-sport standout at Oxford High was a natural athlete. From his sprinter speed, to his leaping ability to his pure strength, there wasn’t a sport that Keller couldn’t seem to master.
But after being out of high school for eight years and away from competitive sports for the past six years overall, Keller is making a return through professional boxing.
Keller, 27, didn’t expect to be a boxer growing up and didn’t even expect to be doing anything physical at this point in his life. (October 13, 2010, Page 6)
Shackelford inspired by bye week victory
It’s funny how work can sometimes follow you home.
Last weekend D.T. Shackelford got away from it all — or tried to at least.
Taking advantage of the bye week, the sophomore linebacker packed his bags and went home to Decatur, Ala., to re-charge and see family.
While there he got a chance to see his alma mater, the Austin Black Bears, take on higher ranked Gadsden City and win.
The last-second 33-30 upset got Shackelford thinking about Ole Miss’ similar task at hand, which according to Shackelford, was a good thing after all. (October 13, 2010, Page 6)
Rested Rebels turn focus to No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide
Rested and ready for the final stretch of the Southeastern Conference schedule, Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt talked about his Rebels coming off a bye week and the challenge of playing No. 8 Alabama on the road during his weekly press conference Monday.
Nutt said that the team’s lone off week did some good from a health standpoint. (October 12, 2010, Page 8)
Billups passes, catches way to POW honor
Oxford pulled out all the stops in its upset bid at West Point last Friday with Guy Cameron Billups as the trigger man.
Not only did Billups complete 17 of 36 passes for two scores and 291 yards, but he also caught a 9-yard touchdown pass on a trick play that put the Chargers ahead 7-0.
On the Chargers’ final scoring drive of the game that allowed the team a chance to tie the Green Wave, Billups also scrambled for a first down on a 12-yard run.
It’s because of his all-around effort in Oxford’s narrow 22-20 loss that Billups earned this week’s EAGLE Player of the Week honor. (October 12, 2010, Page 8)
Easy to see why Ward is a top target
Friday night it was clear to see why Aberdeen’s Channing Ward is already one of the top recruits out of the state of Mississippi for the 2012 recruiting class.
Ward personifies the phrase “versatile athlete” in virtually every sense of the word.
Against Water Valley on Friday, the 6-foot-4, 230-pound junior lined up all across the defensive line, at tight end and made his presence felt everywhere. (October 12, 2010, Page 9)
Durham scores four TDs on opening night
Taylor Durham scored four touchdowns for the 6-7 year-old Steelers on the opening night of Oxford Park Commission youth football action, but it came in a 32-26 loss to the Bears.
In the other 6-7 games, the Jets pounded the Chiefs 27-6, the Packers defeated the Vikings 28-6, while the Giants topped the Cowboys 28-12. In the 8-9 league, the Giants beat the Cowboys 13-6, while the Raiders blanked the Saints 31-0. In two 10-12 games, the Cowboys edged the Giants 13-12, while the Bears topped the Jets 33-15. LHS benefit golf tournament
The 2nd annual Lafayette Baseball Golf Tournament will be held Saturday at the Ole Miss Golf Course. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. and run through the start time at 8 a.m. Cost is $60 per person to enter the four-man scramble.
Lunch will be provided and there will be prizes for golfers who finish first and second as well as a prize awarded for the longest drive.
