Defense, special teams lift WVHS past Cougars
The Water Valley Blue Devils (7-2, 2-1) won convincingly Friday night in a very important Region 2-3A game against the South Pontotoc Cougars (4-5, 2-1) as a tenacious defense and well-executed special teams unit were the difference in the 38-14 Blue Devil victory. (October 18, 2010, Page 1B)
Lady Rebels sitting pretty after sweep
It’s been three seasons since Ole Miss’ volleyball program last graced an NCAA Tournament bracket.
Following Sunday’s hard-fought 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22) victory over Arkansas at the Gillom Sports Complex, the Lady Rebels appear to have positioned themselves for a return trip to the tournament.
The win capped a successful weekend that began with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-18) victory against No. 12 LSU on national television and extended Ole Miss’ winning streak to five matches.
With an 8-2 league record (and 14-5 overall), Ole Miss hopes it has done enough halfway through the conference schedule to legitimize its tournament hopes. (October 18, 2010, Page 3B)

Kennedy likes team’s potential
A rested Andy Kennedy will lead his Ole Miss Rebels into the 2010-11 season a little over a month from now. Until then, he will lead the Rebels through team practices, which started today.
Kennedy, who helped lead the Rebels to the NIT Final Four last year, talked highly about his team heading into the start of drills and thought the work they have done so far is a good foundation for things to come. (October 15, 2010, Page 6A)
Rebels have chance to accomplish rarity at Alabama on Saturday
A huge opportunity to post a rare road win over No. 8 Alabama has been the driving theme of the Ole Miss coaches and players this week. Buoyed by an off week to mend injures and the Crimson Tide’s loss to South Carolina, the Rebels have come across as inspired heading into the game rather than worried about facing an upset Alabama team looking to rebound. WVHS, OHS look to bounce back; LHS heads to Tenn.
After difficult losses a week ago, the Water Valley Blue Devils and Oxford Chargers will be looking to bounce back tonight with home games against South Pontotoc and Hernando respectively.
The Lafayette Commodores, meanwhile, will jump out of region play and travel north to face a difficult Millington Central (Tenn.) Trojans squad.
All kickoffs are set for 7 p.m. Oxford’s game can be heard on 95.5 FM, while Water Valley’s game will be broadcast on 105.5 FM and Lafayette’s on 93.7 FM. (October 15, 2010, Page 6A)
Tie breaker gives Volleys the win
The Oxford Park Commission’s Volleys defeated the Spinners on Thursday thanks to a tie-breaker (fewest games lost).
The Volleys claimed both singles points thanks to wins by Ryan Mounce and Barrett Childress. The Spinners bounced back in the two doubles matches. Will Carter and Cole Grafton claimed the No. 1 doubles match, while Austin Haynes and Eli Abel combined to claim the second doubles match. (October 15, 2010, Page 7A)
