Dolphins take two in OPC softball

Two outstanding offensive displays produced two wins for the Dolphins in the Oxford Park Commission 9-10 year-old softball league Saturday at FNC Park.

    Reds, Red Sox come away winners on Monday

    Oxford Park Commission youth baseball action produced two winners in the 9-year-old league Monday at FNC Park. The Bert’s Plumbing Reds defeated the Rainbow Cleaners Yankees 16-9, while the Larson’s Big Star Red Sox doubled up the Ligon Oral Surgery Diamondbacks 8-4. (June 22, 2010, Page 7)

      Three area players headed to all-star game

      Lafyette’s Josh Mills and Jarrett Patton will join Oxford’s Luke Gibbs on this year’s District 2 All-Star team that will compete in the annual State Games of Mississippi next week.

      The three area players were selected to join 15 other players from the Northwest Mississippi area after having a successful tryout on June 2 at NWCC.

      The team will be coached by Olive Branch’s Chris Chambliss, while the annual tournament begins Thursday and runs through June 27 at Meridian Community College.

      Joining Mills, Patton and Gibbs on this year’s team include: Mitchel Babb (South Panola), Lee Selfs (South Panola), Bobby Epps (South Panola), Garrett Blaylock (DeSoto Central), Mitchell Flowers (DeSoto Central), Cody Carson (Independence), Chase Clark (Bruce), Jay King (Bruce), Austin Gregory (Ingomar), Drew Milligan (DeSoto Central), Jared Thompson (DeSoto Central), Nick Reeves (Olive Branch), Nathan Vannortwick (Olive Branch), Cody Reed (Horn Lake). (June 18, 2010, Page 7A)

        Franklin to be inducted into the MAC Hall of Fame

        Bobby Ray Franklin, a former Ole Miss Rebel standout and current head football coach at Northwest Mississippi Community College, will be one of five members inducted into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame. The awards banquet will be held June 25 at 7 p.m. in the Hilton Hotel in Jackson. Joining Franklin as this year’s group of honorees are Mike Bain, Pontotc High’s championship cross country and track coach, Milton Kuykendall, championship basketball coach at Nettleton and Horn Lake, Jimmy Guy McDonald, championship basketball and baseball coach at Houlka and Kossuth, and Isaiah Peterson, a championship basketball coach at Shelby-Broad Street and Coahoma County.

          Oxford Park Commission soccer registration set to begin

            Ole Miss Ladies Forum going on year No. 10

            The Ole Miss Ladies Football Forum will be celebrating its 10th year of existence July 23-24. This year’s guest speaker will be CBS sports broadcaster Tim Brando while country music performer Darryl Worley will give a concert following the first night’s activities.

            A fashion show, featuring the wives of the Ole Miss coaches and their children, has already sold out, but it will highlight the first day of the event. The cost of Saturday’s forum is $150 and women have the ability to not only get their picture made with Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt and listen to Brando, but tour the Indoor Practice Facility, watch a highlight video and gain valuable football information from the Ole Miss all the defensive coaches and co-offensive coordinator Dave Rader.

              Barber leads 13-14 Cubs past Royals

              Ty Barber had a big night at the plate and on the mound to help lift the Bancoxford Insurance Services Cubs to an 8-3 win over the Sharp Insurance Royals in the lone 13-14 year-old Oxford Park Commission youth league baseball game Tuesday night at FNC Park.

              In other games from FNC Park, the Bert’s Plumbing Reds edged the Rayner Eye Clinic Phillies 4-3, while the Ligon Oral Surgery Diamondbacks pounded the Rainbow Cleaners Yankees 11-1. In the lone 11-12 game, the Chandler Nissan Cardinals beat the Orioles 5-1. (June 16, 2010, Page 6)

                Ole Miss baseball hosting three summer camps

                The Ole Miss baseball team will be holding three summer camps in the coming weeks. The first camp will begin Monday and run through June 25. The day camp is for youth in first through eighth grade.

                The final two camps will be held July 12-15 and July 19-22. Both have overnight options for campers and both are open for youth in grades one through 12.

                    Nash’s bat leads Braves past Red Sox

                    Bo Nash’s three RBIs and two hits helped pace an offensive attack that led to a 14-3 win for the 10-year-old First National Bank Braves over the Freeland Shull Attorney’s at Law Red Sox Thursday night at FNC Park.

                    In other Oxford Park Commission youth baseball action Thursday, the Hunters Hollow Brewers beat the Chandler Nissan Cardinals 11-4 in the 11-12 league, while the Gilliland Orthodontics Yankees edged the Bank of Oxford Dodgers 7-5. In the 13-14 league, the Twins beat the Royals by forfeit, while Davis Logistics of Oxford Braves doubled up the Sharp Insurance Royals 8-4.
