PEARL — Five minutes was all the time Oxford girls track coach Jamie Perkins gave Ann Houston to prepare herself to run in the 4×400 meter relay on Friday at the MHSAA Class 5A state meet held at Pearl High School.
After spending the entire day supporting her teammates and watching the Lady Chargers pile up the points and a lead at the annual meet from behind the fence that surrounds Pearl’s track, Houston said she was surprised to find out Perkins had chosen her over Meredith Sanford to run in the final event that would seal a second straight title for the Lady Chargers. The Chargers were sixth out of 12 teams that competed in last week’s MHSAA Class 5A state golf tournament held at the Laurel Country Club. The Chargers shot a 711 in the two-day tournament. The annual Drew Tyler Charger Basketball Camp will be held May 31-June 3 in the Turner Center gymnasium located on the Ole Miss campus. The camp is open for kids in grades K-7 and cost is $95 before May 27 and $100 at the door. Registration forms can be picked up at Oxford High and University Sporting Goods.
The camp runs daily from 8 a.m. to noon. Registration on May 31 is from 7:30 to 8:30. The camp features individual instruction on shooting, passing, dribbling, rebounding and emphasises positive attitude, work habits and self discipline. Campers need gym shorts, tennis shoes and T-shirts. The camp will be organized and run by OHS boys coach Drew Tyler and his assistants. (May 16, 2011, Page 4B)
