Freeman’s 5 goals help OPC Galaxy surge past Earthqakes

Luke Freeman’s five-goal scoring spree lift the Oxford Park Commission Under-10 boys Galaxy soccer team to a 7-5 victory over the Earthquakes. In the other U10 boys game, the Sounders topped the Wizards 4-1.  In the U10 girls league, the Crew and Fire tied 1-1 and United up-ended the Sounders 3-1. (September 22, 2010, Page 7)

    Brewer’s hat trick lifts OPC Tornados

    Dempsey Brewer scored three goals to help lead the Under 10 Tornados to a 5-1 win over the Crew Monday night in Oxford Park Commission youth soccer action. In the other U-10 game, United blanked the Fire 2-0.

    In two U-10 girls league games, the Crew shut out the Galaxy 1-0, while the Earthquakes downed the Sounders 2-0. In two Under-12 boys league games, the Galaxy halted the Earthquakes 4-0, while the Sounders and Wizards played to a 1-1 tie. In the U-12 girls league, the United topped the Sounders 4-1, while the Galaxy topped the Tornados 4-1. (September 21, 2010, Page 7)

      Commodores get first win

      The Lafayette Commodores earned their first win in ninth-grade football Monday with a 14-0 shutout of Itawmaba AHS. The coaching staff credited the play of the entire defense and for the team continuing to battle after a slow start to the season.

      Cam Herod led the team with a 4-yard scoring run on offense and the return of an interception 35 yards for a touchdown on defense. The team will be back in action at home against Senatobia on Sept. 28. (September 21, 2010, Page 7)

        OHS varsity teams fare well at Mississippi State HS meet

        Oxford’s boys and girls cross country teams competed in the MSU High School Invitational meet held Saturday. Both teams finished fifth overall.

        The Chargers were led by Lucien Duchaine who finished ninth overall with a time of 18 minutes, 11 seconds. Marcus Barnes was 16th with a 19:06, Kevin Clancy was 25th with a 19:31, while Wilson Gardner rounded out the finishers with a 35th-place finish (20:03). Scott Parkin and Austin Carter also scored for the Chargers. (September 20, 2010, Page 4B)

          LHS teams compete in Saltillo Invitational

          Lafayette’s varsity girls cross country team finished fourth in Saturday’s Saltillo Meet. Esmeralda Rodriguez led the team with an eighth-place finish on the 4K course with a time of 17 minutes, 25 seconds. Manon Mullen was 17th with a time of 17:59. Mariah Buford and Corey Hollis finished 27th and 28th respectively, while Teierah Campbell was 52nd overall. (September 20, 2010, Page 4B)

            The Commodores and the Rebels: More than 11 decades of history

            Local historian Jack Lamar Mayfield takes a look back at the Ole Miss-Vanderbilt football series, writing about the first few meetings between the two schools and then taking a look at a notable 1947 meeting when John Vaught’s Rebels overcame an early-season loss to the Commodores to win the Southeastern Conference championship. (September 17, 2010, Page 4B)

              ‘Dores split with South Panola

              Lafayette’s eighth-grade football team continued to roll over teams as they posted a 16-0 win over South Panola Thursday night.

                Volleys top Spinners

                In the Oxford Park Commission’s Junior Team Tennis League, the Volleys topped the Spinners 3-1. Earning wins for the Volleys in three doubles matches were: Matt Reed and Will Carter, Zacarrah Nelms and Ryan Morgan, and Drew Backstrom and Sadie Wilson.

                The duo of Allie Bowen and Eli Abel picked up the lone point for the Spinners. (September 17, 2010, Page 7A)

                  Hunters Education Class

                  The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks will be holding a hunter’s education class Saturday at the Patricia Lamar National Guard Readiness Center. The class is mandatory for those born on Jan. 1, 1972, or later to purchase a hunting license in the state. The class begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m., and is free of charge. (September 17, 2010, Page 7A)

                    Levy’s five goals leads U10 United to victory

                    Kaitlyn Levy scored five goals to help lead the Under 10 United to a 5-2 win over the Fire Tuesday night in Oxford Park Commission youth soccer action.

                    In the other U-10 game, the Crew and Sounders tied 1-1.

                    In two Under 10 Boys League games, the Sounders topped the Galaxy 6-2 while the Earthquakes beat the Wizards 6-1. (September 15, 2010, Page 9)
