Lady Chargers claim North Half title

The Oxford High swim team didn’t fool around this past weekend at the North Half Swim Meet hosted by Clinton High, as the Lady Chargers placed first with 328 points and the Chargers placed fourth with 202 points.

Rounding out the top four spots in the girls rankings were Madison Central (255), Tupelo (254) and St. Joseph Catholic (222). On the boys’ side, Tupelo placed first with 446 points, followed by Madison Central (299.5) and St. Joseph Catholic (208). (October 19, 2010, Page 9)

    Townsend sends Jets past Steelers in OPC action

    Three touchdowns by Tylan Townsend proved to be the difference for the 6-7 Jets, as they topped the Steelers 33-27 in Oxford Park Commission football action on Monday night.

    In one of the other 6-7 games, the Bears defeated the Cowboys 46-15. The Giants-Vikings and Chiefs-Jaguars scores were not provided.

    In the 8-9 league, the Jets knocked off the Ravens 19-7, the Chiefs beat the Giants 32-12, the Raiders blanked the Cowboys 27-0 and the Steelers snuck by the Bears 12-6.

    In the 10-12 league, the Giants shut out the Chiefs 20-0 and the Bears beatthe Cowboys 19-12. The Steelers-Jets score was not reported. (October 19, 2010, Page 9)

      Ole Miss’ Thomas honored by SEC

      For the second week in a row, a Rebel middle blocker has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, when the league announced junior Regina Thomas as a winner of the weekly award on Monday.

      Thomas helped lead Ole Miss (14-5, 8-2 SEC) to a pair of wins over the weekend including a 3-0 shutout of No. 12 LSU and a win over Arkansas. The victories put Ole Miss atop the SEC Western Division standings and second in the overall league standings halfway through conference play. The Texas native averaged 1.43 blocks per set on the weekend as she put down 10 blocks – a team-high five blocks in both sets – to help the Rebels run their win streak out to five consecutive matches. (October 19, 2010, Page 9)

        Chargers top Tigers in region rivalry game

        Longtime coaching rivals Johnny Hill of Oxford and Anthony Jenkins of Hernando played another chess match Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field and, in the end, it was Hill’s Chargers that made more right moves in a 31-19 victory.

        Oxford scored two touchdowns in the first quarter to jump ahead to stay and added two more scores in the final period to turn back a rally by the visiting Tigers in the game that carried postseason playoff implications. The Chargers evened their Region 1-5A record at 2-2 and improved to 5-3 overall; Hernando dropped to 4-4 and 2-2. (October 18, 2010, Page 1B)

          Defense, special teams lift WVHS past Cougars

          The Water Valley Blue Devils (7-2, 2-1) won convincingly Friday night in a very important Region 2-3A game against the South Pontotoc Cougars (4-5, 2-1) as a tenacious defense and well-executed special teams unit were the difference in the 38-14 Blue Devil victory. (October 18, 2010, Page 1B)

            Early momentum carries WVHS to victory

            The Water Valley Blue Devils (7-2, 2-1) captured a huge divisional win over the Cougars of South Pontotoc (4-5, 2-1) Friday night 38-14. The win ties the Blue Devils for second place in Region 2-3A with the Tigers of Winona. (more…) (October 16, 2010)

              Late surge lifts Oxford past Tigers

              The Oxford Chargers scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and held on to defeat Hernando 31-19 in their regional showdown at Bobby Holcomb Field.

                Tie breaker gives Volleys the win

                The Oxford Park Commission’s Volleys defeated the Spinners on Thursday thanks to a tie-breaker (fewest games lost).

                The Volleys claimed both singles points thanks to wins by Ryan Mounce and Barrett Childress. The Spinners bounced back in the two doubles matches. Will Carter and Cole Grafton claimed the No. 1 doubles match, while Austin Haynes and Eli Abel combined to claim the second doubles match. (October 15, 2010, Page 7A)

                  Durham’s six touchdowns lead OPC Steelers to victory

                  Taylor Durham scored six touchdowns to help lead the 6-7 year-old Steelers to a 38-36 win in Oxford Park Commission youth flag football action Tuesday at FNC Park.

                  In other 6-7 games, the Bears topped the Jets 26-8, the Chiefs nipped the Cowboys 13-12, while the Jags beat the Packers 21-6.

                  In the 8-9 league, the Steelers beat the Saints 42-19, the Ravens beat the Chiefs 19-13, the Packers edged out the Bears 18-14, while the Raiders blanked Giants 12-0.

                  In two 10-12 games, the Steelers blanked the Chiefs 25-0, while the Bears shut out the Giants 20-0. (October 14, 2010, Page 7)
