Conard stands out at Tupelo combine

Those in attendance at last weekend’s Scout.com football combine at Tupelo High saw first hand what the Water Valley coaching staff has been saying for years: Chris Conard is a legit talent.

    Davis slugs U-9 Cardinals past Giants

    Graham Davis’ two home runs and six RBIs in the second inning helped sneak the Under-9 Holcomb Dunbar Attorneys Cardinals past the Gilliland Orthodontics Giants 13-12 during Oxford Park Commission baseball action Tuesday night at FNC Park.       Rebels excluded from NCAA Tournament

      The waiting game officially ended at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Monday for the Ole Miss Rebels.

      During Monday’s NCAA Baseball Tournament Road to Omaha selection show, the field of 64 teams was announced without the Rebels, marking the first time since 2002 that the Ole Miss baseball program has not had a postseason. (more…) (May 31, 2011, Page 8)

        MSU Bulldogs headed to Atlanta

        Mississippi State’s 2011 baseball season will continue this week in Atlanta, Ga., with competition in the NCAA Atlanta Regional hosted by Georgia Tech. Monday afternoon the Bulldogs received an at-large berth in the 64-team field of the 2011 NCAA Baseball Tournament.

        State (34-23), seeded third in the double-elimination regional competition, will meet No. 2 seed Southern Miss (39-17) Friday at 2 p.m. Host Georgia Tech (40-19) will take on No. 4 seed Austin Peay (33-22) in the 6 p.m. (CT) nightcap.             Cotton States League to open season on Saturday

            The BNA Bank Cotton States Baseball League is scheduled to start their third season Saturday with a triple-header beginning at 1 p.m. Several changes are in store for the collegiate wood bat league which plays its games at Legion Field at the New Albany Sportsplex.               Barber named Region 2-5A MVP

              Oxford senior Zac Barber was named Region 2-5A Most Valuable Player over the weekend by region coaches. Barber led the Chargers to the 5A North Half title series against Ridgeland as well as a 19-12 win. (more…) (May 31, 2011, Page 10)

                    LHS grad, 19, killed in wreck

                    Demetrius Owens, 19, of Lafayette County was killed Friday morning when the car he was a passenger in overturned, throwing him out of the vehicle. Funeral arrangements are incomplete with Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford. (more…) (May 27, 2011)
