Blue Devils show another dimension

Water Valley didn’t look like a football team that was out of its element this weekend. It was just the contrary.

The Blue Devils, known as a smash-mouth team that sprinkles in the passing game on offense, regrouped after losing its opening game to advance all the way to the Group B Championship Game of the O-Zone Classic 7-on-7 tournament hosted at FNC Park. (July 11, 2011, Page 7)

    Sisk helps North win All-Star game

    Oxford rising senior Erika Sisk helped lead the North to an 86-82 win in the 47th annual Mississippi High School Girls All-Star game held Saturday at Mississippi College’s Wood Coliseum.

    Sisk finished third on the team with 12 points during the win.

    Coldwater’s Jerontay Clemons led the North with 19 points and 14 rebounds in the win, while Ole Miss verbal commitment, Okolona’s Quinndella Ford, had 12 points for the North. (July 11, 2011, Page 6)

      Sowell on outland list

      Ole Miss senior offensive tackle Bradley Sowell was named to the 2011 Outland Trophy Watch List this morning. The award, given annually to the best interior lineman, is selected each year by members of the Football Writers Association of America. Sowell is one of 11 players from the Southeastern Conference who was named to the preseason watch list and one of 65 total from around the country.

      Joining Sowell on the list from the SEC includes Florida’s Xavier Nixon and Jaye Howard, Alabama’s William Vlachos and Barrett Jones, Georgia’s Ben Jones and Cordy Glenn, Tennessee’s Malik Jackson, South Carolina’s T.J. Johnson and Rokevious Watkins and Kentucky’s Larry Warford. The Outland Trophy is the third oldest award in major college football and will be announced on Dec. 8 at The Home Depot College Football Awards. (July 8, 2011, Page 6A)

        Georgia DB impressed with his visit to Oxford

            Registration ongoing for OPC sports

            Registration for Oxford Park Commission’s fall soccer season is ongoing and will continue through July 22.

              Gibbs’ skills make him prime recruit

              A lot has been made about the new BBCOR bats and their impact on power numbers at the college levels.

              What those bats have also done is put a premium on players who can play “small ball.”

              One player who could benefit greatly from the switch is Oxford’s Luke Gibbs.

                  Sisk headed to All-Star game

                  Oxford High rising senior Erika Sisk will play in the 2011 Mississippi Sports Medicine All-Star basketball game on Saturday. Sisk is one of only 24 players from the state to be chosen for the game at Mississippi College.

                  Sisk is currently taking part in the Fila Top Ten Camp in Suwannee, Ga., as a member of the AAU Memphis Elite. (July 6, 2011, Page 9)

                    Thees hired as OM’s next softball coach

                    Having posted a 140-193 record over the last five seasons, and most recently a 14-39 mark, it was obvious the next coach of the Ole Miss softball program needed to be one that had experience building a program.

                    With an eye toward that exact need, Ole Miss announced Thursday that it has hired Windy Thees as its next head coach. Thees doesn’t have to travel far, having spent the last six years at Memphis. (more…) (July 1, 2011, Page 8A)
