Fondon shines in loss to Lady Rebels
Growing up, once KeKe Fondon transitioned from the softball field to the basketball court anyway, she dreamed of running up and down the hardwood at the C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum, 20 minutes north of her hometown of Water Valley.
On Wednesday her dream came true. Only, instead of playing in Ole Miss’ red and blue, she was knocking down shots for the visiting Mississippi Valley State Devilettes.
Despite coming out on the losing end of a 68-57 decision, Fondon played a versatile role for the Devilettes. (December 16, 2010, Page 4B)
Lady ‘Dores rally past Tunica-Rosa Fort
The Lady Commodores basketball squad came into Tuesday’s home showdown with Division 2-4A opponent Tunica-Rosa Fort out of sync and it showed up on the scoreboard early.
Empty possessions and the inability to rebound or cover the Lady Lions’ 3-point attack proved to be detrimental early in the game, but as the game progressed, Lafayette was able to adapt enough to pull out a 58-51 victory in overtime over Rosa Fort.
In the boys matchup, the Commodores fell behind early and were never able to recover, falling to the Lions 73-53. (December 15, 2010, Page 8A)
Rebels pick up two juco signees
Ole Miss football coach Houston Nutt saw his roster increase today as junior college football players started signing their National Letters of Intent.
For mid-year entrance, junior college players could start signing with a four-year college today and be eligible to participate in spring drills. As of press time, ASA College (Brooklyn, N.Y.) defensive back Ivan Nicholas (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) and teammate, defensive tackle Gilbert Pena (6-4, 315), had signed on with the Rebels.
Two other players, Copiah-Lincoln defensive back Wesley Pendleton (5-11, 180) and Iowa Western quarterback Zack Stoudt (6-5, 230), were expected to also sign with the Rebels later today. Stoudt, who started his college career at Louisville, recently visited Oxford and verbally committed to the Rebels on Tuesday over an offer from Kansas. (December 15, 2010, Page 8A)
Rebels gain experience with latest win
A balanced scoring ledger, led by senior Chris Warren’s 18 points, stood out on the box score in Ole Miss’ 101-69 win over Mississippi Valley State Monday night at C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum. But as gaudy as the Rebels’ shooting percentage or point total were against the out-manned Delta Devils, the two most important things accomplished from Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy’s perspective was getting 11 players quality minutes and earning yet another win. Hickory Flat edges Blue Devils
The Water Valley boys basketball team was unable to pull out a road win over an experienced Hickory Flat team Monday night. The Blue Devils lost 60-56 after holding a slim 27-25 lead at the half and the game being tied 44-44 after three quarters. (more…) (December 14, 2010, Page 9)
JUCO QB chooses Rebels over Kansas
Landing a seasoned junior college quarterback for the 2010 signing class was one of the many goals Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt wanted to achieve following the Rebels’ loss to Mississippi State last month. Thanks to a successful trip made by Iowa Western Community College’s Zack Stoudt over the weekend to Oxford, that goal got a lot closer to becoming a reality.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Stoudt chose the Rebels on Monday over serious interest from Kansas thanks in large part to his official visit to Ole Miss’ campus and the relationship he started to build with Nutt and quarterbacks coach Dave Rader. (December 14, 2010, Page 8)
Wilfawn’s 14 points lifts 7-8 Bulls past Lakers
Kortlen Wilfawn’s 14 points prove to be the difference for the 7-8 Bulls in their 15-12 win over the Lakers Monday night in Oxford Park Commission youth basketball action. In the other 7-8 game, the Jazz beat the Sun 16-8. In the 9-10 league, the Mavericks beat the Bulls 30-14. (December 14, 2010, Page 9)
Ole Miss baseball to host alumni game
On Monday the Ole Miss baseball program announced it plans to host the first-ever alumni game under head coach Mike Bianco.
The game is set for Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. and will be played at Oxford-University Stadium. The game is expected to feature current pros such as Chris Coghlan, Matt Tolbert, Lance Lynn and Drew Pomeranz facing off against the 2011 Rebels.
Tickets are $5 for general admission with the proceeds going the Ernie LaBarge Bullpen Club and can be purchased at OleMissAlumni.com/Events.
