OHS looking to win fourth-straight title
Oxford’s drive to win a fourth-straight state title in tennis will begin Saturday with a preseason match against Pontotoc at the John Leslie Tennis Courts.

Callaway upsets Oxford in 5A North Half tourney
Oxford’s planned run in the MHSAA’s Class 5A North Half tournament came to stop before it really got started Friday night at Jackson’s Lanier High School gym. After playing so well against Clarksdale in the opener of the 5A playoffs, the Lady Chargers were unable to duplicate that effort in a 69-57 setback to Callaway. (more…) (February 21, 2011, Page 6)
Oxford teams win powerlifting titles
Oxford’s two powerlifting teams continued to show how strong they both are this weekend by winning the regional powerlifting meets at the OMS gym. It was the first regional titles for the school in either the girls or boys divisions. (February 21, 2011, Page 6)
Rams take down OHS in 5A playoffs
Oxford boy’s basketball coach Drew Tyler pointed out the positives of his Chargers and a season that saw them advance to the Class 5A North Half tournament at Indianola-Gentry. It was hard to be critical of much the Chargers have done the last two weeks of the season even after they lost 61-34 to Jackson’s Provine in the North Half semifinals Friday night. WVHS, LHS, OHS perform well in jamborees
All three area high school baseball teams concluded their preseasons in successful fashion on Saturday. In Horn Lake’s jamboree, the Oxford Chargers finished 2-0 with a 10-6 win over Senatobia and a 7-4 win over host school Horn Lake. (more…) (February 21, 2011, Page 8)
Oxford’s Kendricks wins UK Invitational
Oxford High standout pole vaulter Sam Kendricks continued to shine during the indoor season over the weekend by winning the University of Kentucky High School Invitational with a leap of 15 feet, 6 inches.
Kendricks’ latest performance landed him No. 17 in the nation according to dyestate.com. The mark sets a new record in the state of Mississippi from an indoor standpoint. According to OHS coach Scott Kendricks, the competition came to an exciting climax when Sam cleared the 15-6 attempt and another vaulter, Nikita Kirillov failed to clear the height. Oxford teams facing tough tests in North Half

Chargers show great effort in playoff win
The Oxford Chargers haven’t always put forth complete efforts this season. Some nights, their defense was lacking, or they would get beat on the boards because of lackluster effort.
That wasn’t the case on Tuesday night, as the Chargers completed Oxford’s sweep of Clarksdale by defeating the Wildcats 63-57 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. The win advances the Chargers (17-10 overall) to the 5A North Half tournament Friday at Indianola-Gentry, a feat the team did not accomplish last season. (February 16, 2011, Page 6)
Lady Chargers top Clarksdale in first round
It wasn’t long after the Oxford Lady Chargers lost to West Point in the Region 2-5A tournament championship last Friday that coach Shayne Linzy was looking forward to Monday’s first round of the 5A playoffs.
Despite Clarksdale’s overall size superiority and playing away from home, Linzy felt like his team would respond in fine fashion and be a very tough team for the Wildcats to have to defeat. His intuition proved to be right as the Lady Chargers used their speed and stamina to knock off last year’s 5A North Half champion, 54-52, in the first step to advancing to Jackson for the MHSAA state tournament. Chargers hold off West Point to win 2-5A title
Oxford’s knack for playing its best basketball in the postseason and winning division tournament titles under coach Drew Tyler continued Friday night as the Chargers knocked off West Point 71-61. The win not only secured a 10th championship trophy for Tyler in his 14 years of coaching at OHS, it also ensured a home playoff game Tuesday against Clarksdale a year after the Chargers had to travel to Ridgeland.
