It doesn’t matter that the last time the Oxford Chargers and Pearl Pirates faced one another was a year ago. The Chargers’ 28-14 loss is still fresh in their minds and head coach Johnny Hill has made sure that his team learns from the past.
Sure, then-junior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups had suffered a broken finger on his throwing hand the week prior and as such his throwing ability was inhibited by a cast.

Oxford High’s two varsity basketball teams had a successful trip to DeSoto County Tuesday as both earned wins in the Horn Lake Tournament. The Lady Chargers beat Southaven 61-58, while the Chargers overcame a 12-point first quarter deficit to post a 69-67 win over Hernando. Oxford’s girls opened the season with a one-sided 78-36 win over the Lady Cardinals, while the Chargers followed the girls lead in the nightcap as they rolled to a 90-49 win. (November 9, 2010, Page 8)
Oxford’s middle school basketball teams had a successful trip to Grenada Monday as three of the four squads earned wins. The seventh-grade and eighth-grade girls teams won games, while the eighth-grade boys won 29-24. (November 9, 2010, Page 9)
The first really cold night of the 2010 football season had no impact on the Oxford Chargers’ passing game Friday night. Senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups was near flawless throwing the ball as he helped lead the Chargers to a 40-21 win over Saltillo in the regular season finale.
For the Chargers, who will try to build on their 8-3 overall record on the road at Pearl in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs, Friday’s win was another example of just how complex and in sync the offense under Billups has become. (November 8, 2010, Page 3B)
A strong finish to the season in the Class 5A state meet helped lift the Oxford Chargers and Lady Chargers to third-place finishes Saturday at MHSAA Cross Country Championships held at Mississippi College’s Choctaw Trails.
Five overall athletes earned All-State recognition for Oxford, including Callie Mayo, Emily Hankins and Audrey Dayan for the Lady Chargers and Lucian Duchaine and Fisher Austin for the Chargers. (November 8, 2010, Page 3B)
The Oxford High soccer teams got the 2010-11 season off to a good start by winning the Patriot Classic held at Lewisburg on Saturday.
The Lady Chargers went 3-0 to capture the title, while the Chargers went 2-0-1. Oxford’s girls defeated Lake Cormorant 3-0 in the first game, North Pontotoc 3-0 in the second and then topped Lewisburg 1-0 in the title game. (November 8, 2010, Page 3B)
For the Water Valley Blue Devils and Lafayette Commodores, the time to be clicking on all cylinders is now, as both teams begin their respective runs at Class 3A and Class 4A state titles.
