Oxford’s girls basketball team defeated West Point on Friday night to remain undefeated in District 1-5A play, while the Green Wave defeated the Oxford boys 69-60 in the nightcap. Good things are expected from the Oxford Chargers powerlifting team this season as they head into the fourth year under coach Jason Russell.
Russell said this year’s team is the most experienced one he has had and the most depth he’s had to work with. Oxford finished sixth in the state meet last year with several of those lifters returning. (January 21, 2011, Page 7A)
No one must have told Oxford goalkeeper Megan Murphy that tonight’s game against Lake Cormorant was scheduled to be Senior Night.
On Wednesday, the senior keeper’s exceptional play lifted the Lady Chargers to a narrow 1-0 victory over Hernando to claim the District 1-5A championship.
In the nightcap, the Oxford boys were able to survive a late barrage to win 2-1.
Murphy had a pretty easy night until the final minutes of the game when she showed her experience time and time again to preserve the win, making an array of saves from point-blank range. (January 20, 2011, Page 6)
