Chargers kick off with defending MAIS champs

No one can ever accuse OHS coach Johnny Hill and the Chargers of taking it easy in pre-region games. This season, Oxford opens with defending MAIS champ Jackson Prep and follows with MHSAA Class 5A champion Starkville, a very athletic Cleveland East Side team and Class 4A power and crosstown rival Lafayette. This week, all of the attention turns to getting better against a deep and talented Prep team in a public school-private school matchup at Bobby Holcomb Field. (August 22, 2013, Page 6)

    Tuesday’s local sports briefs include:

    – Ben Hubbard made a hole-in-one at the recent Oxford Lady Charger Softball Benefit golf tourney played at the Country Club of Oxford

    – ESPN announced Monday it plans to televise Ole Miss basketball games against Kentucky and Oregon this season.

    – Ole Miss has promoted Lady Rebel assistant tennis coach Jason Ontog to associate head coach.

    – Registration is open for the fifth annual Lafayette Commodore Baseball Golf Tournament set for Sept. 14. (August 20, 2013, Page 7)

      Lady Chargers fall to TCHS in opener

      The Oxford High Lady Chargers played their first slow-pitch softball game since the program was dropped when fast-pitch softball began, and dropped a 19-0 decision to Tishomingo County. (August 20, 2013, Page 6)

        Monken sets two-week timetable for QBs

        HATTIESBURG—If first-year Southern Miss football coach Todd Monken has his way, the battle to be the team’s starting quarterback this season will be a short one.

        Monken said Friday after the team’s first practice of fall camp that he plans to narrow the quarterback race down to two players after one week and have the starter set after the second week. (more…) (August 5, 2013, Page 7)

            WVHS concludes 7-on-7 season

            Now the real football season can commence.

                Chargers looking to win 7-on-7 title

                A final tuneup for the Oxford Chargers prior to the start of the 2013 football season could result in national bragging rights. A little less than a month after winning the inaugural Mississippi Invitational in Tupelo, the Chargers travel to Hoover, Ala., to take part in the National Select 7-on-7 Championships.
