Four Lafayette High lifters qualified for next month’s Class 4A state powerlifting meet with top three finishes this past weekend in the North Half meet held at Lexington-McClain. Two early season tests ended up being valuable learning experiences for the Lafayette Commodores Thursday night in the Pontotoc Tournament.
Less than a week after LHS got its 2011 season off to a great start with two wins against Saltillo and Nettleton, the Commodores suffered their first setbacks of the season with a 7-3 loss to Mooreville and a 12-11 loss to Belmont. (more…) (March 4, 2011, Page 6A)
The first day for high school football prospects to sign with college programs may be 11 months away, but Lafayette quarterback Jeremy Liggins is already starting to investigate schools that have offered him a scholarship. A balanced lineup coupled with a great overall effort proved to be the right combination for the Lafayette Lady Commodores Thursday in the Class 4A North Half powerlifting meet held at Itawamba AHS. LHS qualified 11 of its 12 lifters that took part in the event and easily won the first place by totaling 65 points, 18 more than second-place finisher Pontotoc. (March 4, 2011, Page 6A)
Lafayette’s middle school baseball team earned two lopsided 14-0 wins over South Panola Thursday. Both wins were no-hitters for the Commodores, who had four pitchers combine to strike out 19 batters.
The Commodores narrowly missed out winning in boys doubles and mixed doubles Thursday in their tennis match with Pontotoc. The setbacks ended up resulting into a 5-2 win for Pontotoc. Mallory Davis earned one of the two points for LHS in the match as she defeated Lauren Clayton 6-1, 6-1 in singles action. The other win for the Commodores came at No. 2 boys doubles as Hunter Knight and Jacob Roberts topped Jacob Hatcher and Jacob Ferguson 6-1, 7-5. (more…) (March 4, 2011, Page 8A)
