Hart doesn’t see weakness in Chargers
If there is a weakness in the Oxford Chargers lineup, then Lafayette coach Anthony Hart has yet to find it. The veteran coach and leader of the No. 1 team in Class 4A said his team’s opponent on Friday night is strong on both sides of the ball, especially on the defensive line. (September 2, 2010, Page 6)
Crosstown Classic special for everyone
The Crosstown Classic: What a great week for the players, fans and coaches of both schools. It’s a time for everyone who has ever attended Lafayette or Oxford to reflect on their memories of this most important game of the year.
I can certainly remember my senior year of football at Lafayette in 1977 and all the emotions that the week entailed leading up to the game. I remember a very descriptive letter supposedly from the Oxford players strategically placed on the wall in the field house that detailed how they were going to have a lot more fun on Friday night than we were. I must say that even at 17, I was less intimidated than amused. I can remember smiling, wondering which coach was responsible for engineering such a motivating tactic. (September 2, 2010, Page 6)
Hill expects hard-fought Classic
Explosive was the word that Oxford coach Johnny Hill used several times to describe Lafayette’s offense and quarterback Jeremy Liggins earlier this week. Hill’s Chargers have the extremely tough task of trying stop, or at least slow, the potent Commodores, who have scored 83 points the first two weeks against Cleveland and Memphis Trezevant, Friday night at Bobby Holcomb Field. The last 24 hours have been quite busy for the Ole Miss football program. Instead of focusing solely on the season-opener against Jacksonville State, the Rebels were dealt the news yesterday that quarterback transfer Jeremiah Masoli’s waiver was denied by the NCAA. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Rebels will also be without senior defensive end Kentrell Lockett in the season opener because of a heart issue. (more…) (September 1, 2010)
Oxford, Lafayette split rivalry games
Rivalry week between the Lafayette and Oxford school districts continued Tuesday night with middle school football action at Bobby Holcomb Field.
The Chargers won the seventh-grade game 26-6, while the Commodores took the eighth-grade game in the nightcap 16-0. (September 1, 2010, Page 7)
3-0 win not enough for Lady Commodores
Last season’s run to the Class 4A state tournament has lit a fire under the Lafayette Lady Commodores volleyball team.
That fact was never more evident than on Tuesday, when despite beating Water Valley 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-14) the Lady Commodores still wanted more. (September 1, 2010, Page 7)
Crosstown Classic tickets on sale
Tickets for Friday’s annual Crosstown Classic between Lafayette and Oxford are currently on sale at both high schools and University Sporting Goods located on the Oxford Square.
Cost of the tickets are $5. There were 2,000 tickets available for this year’s game that will be played at Oxford’s Bobby Holcomb Field. Oxford Athletics Director Johnny Hill said that all unsold tickets will be available to spectators at the gate. Kickoff at Bobby Holcomb Field is set for 7:30 p.m. between the 2-0 Chargers and 2-0 Commodores. (September 1, 2010, Page 7)
Oxford wins 9th grade game

Chargers’ Billups earns Player of the Week honor
Oxford senior quarterback Guy Cameron Billups completed 13 of 22 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Chargers to their victory over Charleston. The effort, which sparked a team effort by OHS, earned Billups Player of the Week honors. Honorable mentions include Tre Carothers and DeShaun McNeal of Oxford, Jeremy Liggins and Demarkus Dennis of Lafayette and J.D. Fondon and Torrey Horton of Water Valley. (August 31, 2010, Page 6)
Commodores score early, often in Friday rout
The Lafayette Commodores scored early, often and in a variety of ways Friday night as they posted a 35-16 victory over Memphis Trezevant in their 2010 home opener at William L. Buford Stadium.
Lafayette, now 2-0 heading into its annual Crosstown Classic showdown with Oxford, scored on its second play from scrimmage and on its last play of the first half (that capped an 11-play, 91-yard drive) in building a 35-0 lead that allowed coach Anthony Hart to sit many of his starters in the second half and work on building depth.
