‘Dores’ Dennis runs into POW honors

The catalyst for Lafayette’s 52-0 romp over Byhalia on Friday was running back Demarkus Dennis.

The junior rushed for 187 yards and four scores in Lafayette’s Region 2-4A showdown. As a result, Dennis was named the EAGLE’s Player of the Week for the first time this season. (September 28, 2010, Page 6)

Area football teams return to action tonight

All three area high school football teams will be in different places in their season when they trot out of their locker rooms tonight.

The Oxford Chargers (3-1 overall) travel to New Hope tonight to open its Class 1-5A schedule, while the Lafayette Commodores (5-0, 1-0) host Class 2-4A opponent Byhalia for their second region game and the Water Valley Blue Devils (4-1) conclude their non-region schedule with a bout at Independence.

During Oxford’s 3-1 start, quarterback Guy Cameron Billups has been leading the offense with precision.

The senior has completed 50 of 88 passes for 870 yards and nine touchdowns. (September 24, 2010, Page 6A)

Lady ‘Dores get big volleyball win Thursday night

Reports of the Lafayette Lady Commodores’ demise may have been slightly premature.

On Thursday, Lafayette virtually checked its ticket to the playoffs with a convincing 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-10, 25-16) win over Class I, Region 2 opponent Center Hill.

The emotional victory subsequently put the Mustangs and Lady Commodores in a tie for the second spot in Region 2, but according to the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s rule book, Lafayette will advance because it wins the third tie breaker. (September 24, 2010, Page 7A)

                Lewisburg eliminates LHS from playoffs

The Lafayette Lady Commodores will not be making a second-straight run at a state title.

With a return trip to Jackson on the line, the Lady ‘Dores were unable to knock off Region 2 leading Lewisburg, falling at home 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-19) on Tuesday. (September 22, 2010, Page 6)

                    Lafayette’s Gooch earns POW award

Friday’s outstanding all-around performance for Lafayette’s Anfernee Gooch at Center Hill almost didn’t happen. Instead of racking up 177 yards receiving and an additional 93 yards through the return game, Gooch almost didn’t play because of a car wreck he was involved in the night before.

LHS coach Anthony Hart remembers Gooch telling him that he didn’t think he would play Friday night. Hart was preparing to move to Plan B when the senior was convinced that playing would not only be his best option, but the best option for the Commodores as well. (September 21, 2010, Page 6)
