Led by four first-place finishers, the Lafayette Lady Commodores finished third at Saturday’s Region 1-4A meet held at Pontotoc. LHS totaled 91 points, just three behind Center Hill with 94. Pontotoc won the girls meet with 171.
Lafayette’s boys finished sixth at the meet with 43 points. Pontotoc won the boys meet with 128 points. The top four finishers in each event advance to Saturday’s 4A North Half meet at Mississippi State in Starkville. Ten Lady Commodores advanced to that meet, while five Commodores advanced. COLUMN: Water Valley’s matchup against Leflore County in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs had no feel of desperation or competition to it.
Instead of two teams matching skills that were ultimately decided by one great play like Lafayette’s series with Kosciusko, the Blue Devils easily defeated the completely over matched Tigers in a doubleheader that was as lacking of a championship caliber atmosphere as you could ever imagine. KOSCIUSKO — A dive, a drive and an outstanding individual effort on the mound proved to be the winning formula for the Lafayette Commodores to earn a 2-1 win over Kosciusko in the decisive game of a best-of-three Class 4A playoff series on Saturday.
LHS (22-5 overall) was able to advance to a second round matchup with North Pontotoc by holding off the Whippets when it mattered most. After LHS opened the series with an 11-3 win at home on Friday night, Kosciusko defeated the Commodores 9-4 in the second game to force the winner-take-all third game.
