Community service and softball came together beautifully Thursday morning at Lafayette High. In an attempt to give back to the area each month, first-year coach Katie Moore and her Lady Commodores held a morning-long clinic for 38 elementary students that are enrolled in the Lafayette Summer Camp program.
Moore said that she, her assistants and her players enjoyed interacting with the kids, who took swings off a tee and ran bases among other activities. Moore even joked that the community service could lead to her getting a few players in the future. (July 8, 2011, Page 7A)
The community’s first opportunity to get a glimpse of this season’s prep football teams comes this weekend at the second annual O-Zone Classic. The two-day 7-on-7 tournament begins Friday at 5:30 p.m. Oxford, Lafayette and Water Valley join seven other teams from around the North Mississippi area in the tournament.
Brad Freeman, FNC’s Planning and Marketing Director, said the success of last year’s inaugural tournament was more than enough of a reason to host teams again. (July 7, 2011, Page 6)

Former Oxford pitcher Hunt Halford had quite the outing for the Tippah County Tribe of the Cotton States Baseball League on Saturday. Halford recorded a no-hitter in a 3-1 victory over the Golden Triangle Jets, allowing one run on one walk while striking out three in seven innings of work.
Former Lafayette Commodore Cody Gray took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out four in six innings. (June 28, 2011, Page 7)
