Lafayette splits district games with Lewisburg
There were more signs the Lafayette Commodores were starting to come together as a boys basketball team Friday night in a matchup with Lewisburg in the LHS gym. The Commodores may have lost 48-43 to the visiting Patriots, but instead of falling behind early and eventually losing by double digits, the Commodores showed some grit by rallying from an eight-point deficit in the in the third quarter to pull into the lead late in the fourth quarter. This year’s All-Area team best I’ve seen
This season’s EAGLE All-Area football team was released in Thursday’s sports section. Unfortunately for me, space prevented me from writing a column that would appear next to the story on the back page.
So instead of it appearing on Thursday, I thought sharing my opinion on this year’s team was important.
For those who may have missed the players who made the team, Lafayette junior running back Demarkus Dennis was named Player of the Year, while another 11 Commodores who helped the school win the Class 4A state title made the first-team squad. Three other LHS players were named honorable mention.
Oxford had seven players on this year’s team, while Water Valley had five. Both the Chargers and Blue Devils each had three players receive honorable mention status. (December 17, 2010, Page 6A)
Lafayette’s D. Dennis runs away with top honor
Teams that win championships always have great players leading the way. In the case of the Lafayette Commodores, there were a handful of players that stood out above the rest on a team that was filled from top to bottom with solid high school athletes. (more…) (December 16, 2010, Page 1B)
Lady ‘Dores rally past Tunica-Rosa Fort
The Lady Commodores basketball squad came into Tuesday’s home showdown with Division 2-4A opponent Tunica-Rosa Fort out of sync and it showed up on the scoreboard early.
Empty possessions and the inability to rebound or cover the Lady Lions’ 3-point attack proved to be detrimental early in the game, but as the game progressed, Lafayette was able to adapt enough to pull out a 58-51 victory in overtime over Rosa Fort.
In the boys matchup, the Commodores fell behind early and were never able to recover, falling to the Lions 73-53. (December 15, 2010, Page 8A)
Oxford takes two games from Lafayette
Fresh off of an uncharacteristic three-game losing streak, the Oxford boys soccer team took out its frustrations on crosstown rival Lafayette on a frigid Friday night cruising past the Commodores 8-0 at William L. Buford Stadium. Earlier in the evening, the Lady Chargers scored in the opening minutes of their game against Lafayette and held on for a 1-0 victory at the Ole Miss Soccer Complex.
Having lost three games prior to Friday’s big win, Oxford boys coach Jamie Perkins said he didn’t change anything strategically with the team. He just had a heart-to-heart talk with his players. (December 13, 2010, Page 1B)
Lady ‘Dores down Tupelo; LHS boys fall
Lafayette’s girls and boys basketball teams culminated the first full week of the season with the annual Coach “C” Classic Saturday night in the LHS gym.
The Lady Commodores remained perfect with a 59-28 win over Tupelo, while the Commodores fell 65-40 to the Golden Wave in the final game of the one-day tournament.
For LHS girls coach Amy Sutton and boys coach Eric Robertson, the tournament, and three games this past week, served as a good measuring stick of where both of their teams are heading into district play this week. (December 13, 2010, Page 2B)
Area high schools see some changes to region, district slates
There were subtle changes made to the region and districts that the three area high schools compete in each year by the MHSAA this past week. The new districts and regions will begin with the fall of 2011 and be in place for the next two years. (December 10, 2010, Page 6A)

Hinton, Watkins sign with NWCC
Lafayette’s Anna Watkins and Amanda Hinton extended their soccer careers Tuesday by signing letters of intent to play for Northwest Mississippi Community College and coach Peter Jarjoura.
Both girls felt comfortable about playing for the Lady Rangers and coach Jarjoura, as well as the new teammates they met during their official visit this three weeks ago. (December 8, 2010, Page 8)
