Chargers clip Commodores on the court

Avent’s Park was surrounded by spectators Thursday afternoon as Lafayette and Oxford closed out their regular seasons with the annual tennis meeting between the two schools.

With both squads already a part of the Class 4A (LHS) and 5A (OHS) playoffs, Thursday’s match was about different things for each coach.
The Chargers defeated the Commodores 5-2 but the two wins were a marked improvement for Debbie Swindoll’s Commodores, who lost 7-0 to OHS last year.

Apart from the two wins, the No. 1 boys doubles match had to be decided with a tiebreaker, while two other doubles matches were also competitive. (April 13, 2012, Page 7A)

LHS boys send five to state meet

Lafayette boys powerlifting coach Dennis Robbins will help lead five Commodores into the MHSAA Class 4A state meet Saturday in Jackson’s Mississippi Coliseum. The goal, Robbins said, is for all five to finish third or better at the meet. (more…) (April 13, 2012, Page 7A)

Carter, Clay lead powerful Lady ‘Dores

Lafayette girls powerlifting coach Sandra Smith said she remembers when she asked Cate Clay to become a member of the Lady Commodores. Smith, a veteran powerlifting coach and former cheerleading sponsor at LHS, knew she needed a lifter in the 97 pound weight class and Clay fit the bill.

The only thing Smith didn’t realize when she recruited the petite but powerful Clay was just how outstanding she could become in a sport that the Lady Commodores have become quite good at overall. (April 12, 2012, Page 6)

Wins move ‘Dores closer to spot in 4A playoffs

The Lafayette High School baseball team moved one step closer to locking up a playoff spot with a pair of wins against Rosa Fort on Tuesday evening. The Commodores (10-10 overall, 5-3 Region 2-4A) knocked off the Lions 15-0 and 12-0 in two run-ruled shortened games at W.V. Brewer Field. (April 11, 2012, Page 9)

LMS eliminated from playoffs by Marshall Academy

The Lafayette Middle School Commodores wrapped up their baseball season Monday with a 4-3 loss to Marshall Academy in the first round of the Tri-Lakes Conference playoffs at Oxford High’s Edwin Moak Field.

The Patriots scored three runs in the first on an error and two wild pitches, and while Lafayette (2-8-1 overall) chipped away at Marshall Academy’s lead, it was never able to recover. (April 10, 2012, Page 9)

Lafayette blanks Mooreville in tennis
