Rodriguez leads Lafayette at Corinth Invitational

Paced by an outstanding individual effort from Esmeralda Rodriquez, the Lafayette cross country teams fared well in the Corinth Cross Country Invitational.

Rodriguez led the Lady Commodores to a third-place finish. Twenty five teams from all classifications in the state competed in the meet. Saltillo took first in the meet, while Pontotoc was second. (October 21, 2010, Page 9)

Gooch shows knack for finding the end zone

Lafayette’s Anfernee Gooch has been overshadowed for much of the 2010 season by workhorses Jeremy Liggins and Demarkus Dennis.

That may have played a factor in Gooch’s breakout performance on Friday that earned him his second EAGLE Player of the Week honor.

Against the Millington Central Trojans, Gooch caught four passes and converted each into touchdown scores of 9, 55, 59 and 45 yards. (October 19, 2010, Page 8)

Liggins-Gooch connection too much for MCHS Trojans

Anfernee Gooch’s diminutive size can be misleading.

The Millington Central  Trojans discovered that the hard way as the Lafayette Commodores routed the Trojans 35-6 at Mooney Boswell Field, Millington Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

By the time the game was over, Gooch, listed at 5-foot-6, had racked up 172 receiving yards and four touchdowns. (October 18, 2010, Page 1B)

LHS’ Gooch too much for Millington Central

MILLINGTON, Tenn. — After surrendering a 79-yard punt return for a score the Lafayette Commodores bounced back in a big way, ripping off 35 unanswered points to top the Millington Central (Tenn.) Trojans 35-6. (more…) (October 16, 2010)

WVHS, OHS look to bounce back; LHS heads to Tenn.

The Lafayette Commodores, meanwhile, will jump out of region play and travel north to face a difficult Millington Central (Tenn.) Trojans squad.

LHS gearing up for difficult road foe

There’s nothing like stepping out of the usual slate of foes to break up the monotany of a regular season.

Lafayette’s opponent, the Millington Central Trojans, will do just that when the Commodores head north on I-55 on Friday.

According to head coach Anthony Hart, the Trojans present several problems to Lafayette (8-0 overall), most notably their roster size and playing style. (October 14, 2010, Page 6)

Billups passes, catches way to POW honor

Oxford pulled out all the stops in its upset bid at West Point last Friday with Guy Cameron Billups as the trigger man.

Not only did Billups complete 17 of 36 passes for two scores and 291 yards, but he also caught a 9-yard touchdown pass on a trick play that put the Chargers ahead 7-0.

On the Chargers’ final scoring drive of the game that allowed the team a chance to tie the Green Wave, Billups also scrambled for a first down on a 12-yard run.

It’s because of his all-around effort in Oxford’s narrow 22-20 loss that Billups earned this week’s EAGLE Player of the Week honor. (October 12, 2010, Page 8)

The No. 1 ranked Lafayette Commodores dominated Senatobia in every aspect of the game Friday night, beating the Warriors 54-7 at William L Buford Stadium. The Commodores improved to 8-0 overall on the year and 4-0 in Region 2-4A play  despite starting the game more on the sluggish side. (October 11, 2010, Page 1B)
