Sunday’s obituaries

Vera Ellen Smith Maples — 88, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Miss. Services were held Friday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Minister Bob Brewer officiating. Burial followed in North Oxford Cemetery.

John “Johnny” Horace Pruitt, Jr. — 60, died Friday, March 13, 2015, at his home in Oxford. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Corine Rogers — 69  of Water Valley died Thursday, March 12, 2015, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Springhill Church in Water Valley with Pastor Sammy Townes, Pastor Amos Sims and Pastor Mitchell Steen officiating.  Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Water Valley. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley.

    Bill Beaty Blankenship — 82, died Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford.  Visitation will be held Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home.

    Carolyn Rochelle Boyd-Johnson — 49, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. A celebration of life service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Second Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Bryant Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Yocona Cemetery in Taylor. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

    Helen Newman — 83, died on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at her residence in Greenville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Turkey Creek Baptist Church in Bruce with Bro. Jimmy McLendon officiating. Interment will be in Turkey Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Parker Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

    Beverly Ann “Puddin” Tatum-Walker — 48, died Thursday, March 5, 2015, in Ridgeland. Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Springhill North M.B. Church in Water Valley. Visitation will be this evening from 4-7 p.m. at Serenity-Daniels Funeral Home of Water Valley, which is in charge of arrangements.

      Bill Blankenship — 83, died Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford. Arrangements are incomplete with Waller Funeral Home.

      Annie Lee Buford — 82, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at her daughter’s residence in Oxford. Funeral services will be announced later by Hodges Funeral Homes of Oxford.

      Hattie Ann “Big Mama” Isom — 72, died March 5, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi. Services will be Saturday at noon at Serenity-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford with the Rev. Rodney Dean officiating. Burial is set for Mt. Vernon Church Cemetery in Abbeville. Visitation will be Friday from 2-6 p.m. at Serenity-Martin Funeral Home in Oxford, which is in charge of arrangements.

      Jerry Lipsey — 57, died Sunday, March 8, 2015, at Graceland Care Center in Oxford. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Union Hill M.B. Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Viewing will be Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home of Oxford, which has charge of arrangements.

      Mark D. Lofton — 62, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. The funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Bro. Anthony Williams officiating.  Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 9:30 a.m.

      Thomas Anthony McVeigh — 47, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at his home in Olive Branch. The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Beavers officiating. Burial will follow in Carey Springs Cemetery in Pontotoc County. Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. prior to the service at Waller Funeral Home.

      Roy F. Smith — 90, of Harmontown passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015, in the aftermath of a serious stroke. The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Free Springs United Methodist Church (76 CR 511, Como) with the Rev. Joey Bates officiating. Interment will be in Harmontown Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-3 p.m. at the church. Coleman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

        Curtis Wayne Dennis — 71, died Monday, March 9, 2015, at his home in Water Valley after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks at 10 a.m. Saturday with Bro. Dan Dickerson and Bro. Bennie Turnage officiating. Burial will be in the Anchor Cemetery in Yalobusha County. Visitation will be held Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley.

        Mark Lofton — died Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at North Miss. Medical Center in Tupelo. Arrangements are incomplete with Waller Funeral Home.

        Mildred Groner Wilder McKinney — 85, died Sunday, March 8, 2015, at Tupelo Nursing and Rehab following an extended illness. A celebration of her life is today at 2 p.m. in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors. Private burial will follow in Verona City Cemetery. Visitation will be today from noon to service time.  Holland Funeral Directors Tupelo Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.

        Thomas Anthony McVeigh — 47, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at his home in Olive Branch. Arrangements are incomplete with Waller Funeral Home.

Services will now be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Serenity-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford, with the Rev. Marvin Quarles officiating. Burial will follow in Providence United Methodist Church in Abbeville. There will be no visitation.

                • George Washington “June” Bell — 69, died Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Serenity-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford, with the Rev. Marvin Quarles officiating. Burial will follow in Providence United Methodist Church in Abbeville. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

                Born in Abbeville, he professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with Pilgrims Rest Church in Lafayette County. He attended Gordon School in Abbeville, and he worked at Ray Farms in Abbeville. He loved to help anyone in need, and being around family and people.

                Survivors include three nieces, Loretta Morris, Linda Quarles and Barbara Marion, all of Abbeville; two nephews, Freddie Marion and Tommy Marion, both of Abbeville; and two special cousins, Ora Redmon and Tina Sisk, both of Oxford.

                •  WATER VALLEY — Sheila Gregory Nelson, 51, died Sunday, March 1, 2015, at her home in Water Valley. Services were originally scheduled to be held at 11 this morning in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley, with Chaplain Wayne Harlow and Pastor Bill Rutledge officiating. Burial was to follow in the Walker Cemetery in Yalobusha County. However, due to today’s inclement weather, today’s services were postponed.
                •  Rebecca “Becky” Lynn Chrestman Murphree — 59, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at her home in Lafayette County. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford, with the Rev. Gerald Shook and the Rev. Ken Hanks officiating. Burial will follow with a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Calhoun County. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

                Born in Calhoun County, she was a legal assistant at Tannehill, Carmean and McKenzie PLLC in Oxford. She was a member of Anchor Baptist Church where she attended the Grace Sunday school class, and formerly taught a Bible study class and assisted with children’s church. She loved her scrapbooking club, reading and cross stitch. She enjoyed playing and spending time with her grandchildren.

                Survivors include her daughter, Lindsay Murphree Hastings of Bruce; a son, Jason Lee Murphree of Oxford; two brothers, Mike Alford of Tupelo and Bobby Chrestman of Pontiac, Ill.; four sisters, Mary Bowker of Anchorage, Alaska, Terry West of Washington State, Reba Ward of Big Creek and Noelle Chrestman of Hawaii; and two grandchildren.

                • SOUTHAVEN — Betty Ann McCoy Sullivan, 72, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Southaven Community Church in Southaven. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service at the church. Hernando Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

                Originally from Yocona, she lived in Southaven. She was a retired nurse.

                Survivors include her husband, Stanley Sullivan of Southaven; two daughters, Sherry Cupp and Belinda Higgins, both of Southaven; a son, Charles A. Clark of Southaven; a brother, Tim McCoy of Potlockney; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

                • Glynn Jenkins Hobby Tatum, 83, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at her home in Oxford. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford, with the Rev. Jerry East officiating. Burial will follow in Springdale Cemetery. Visitation will be held for two prior to the service at the funeral home.

                Born in Sledge, she was a retired hair dresser at Glynn’s Beauty Shop. She was a member of Yellowleaf Baptist Church and loved reading her Bible. She enjoyed gardening and arranging the flowers that she grew. She was a quick-witted lady who loved to laugh. Her home was the gathering place where she found pleasure in cooking for her family. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Aubrey Lee Hobby and James Leon Tatum; a daughter, Robin Gail Hobby; and a son, Randy Hobby.

                Survivors include her daughters, Kem Hobby Gossett and Connie Hobby, both of Oxford, and Dana Tatum Harwell of Abbeville; her sons, Marty Hobby of Sardis and Kelly Hobby of Holly Springs; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
