  • Opal Boxx Champion Gore — 89, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Burial will follow in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
  • John Baker Ratliff — died Tuesday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Arrangements are incomplete with Coleman Funeral Home of Oxford.

    • Ruth Mortimer Cooper — 94, died Thursday, March 18, 2010. Services were held Sunday in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley.
    • Marjorie Ann Greene Moxley — 75, died Sunday, March 21, 2010. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Lindsay Cemetery in Belmont. Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 this evening at the funeral home.

      • Robert L. “Bob” Barron — 60, of Indian Rocks Beach, died Sunday, March 21, 2010. Private family services will be held at a later date.
      • Ruth Mortimer Cooper — 94, died Thursday, March 18, 2010. Services were held Sunday in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.
      • Dorthy Mae McNece — 78, died Saturday, March 20, 2010. Services will beheld at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Chapel in Bernie, Mo. Burial will follow in the Bernie Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 this evening at the funeral home.
      • Dovie Durline Mays Murphree — 82, f died Thursday, March 18. 2010. Services were held Saturday in the Henry Chapel of Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley. Burial followed in Pinecrest Cemetery.
      • Marguerite Still — 91, died Friday, March 19, 2010. Services were held this morning at Clear Creek Baptist Church. Burial followed in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
      • Sylvia Christine “Teena” White Wallace — 52, died Thursday, March 18, 2010. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Columbus. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 this evening at Calvert Funeral Home of West Point and one hour prior to the service at the church.

                Integration leader dies at 79

                The woman who took the issue of Oxford schools’ integration to federal court died Saturday at her home in Oxford. Called “the Fannie Lou Hamer of Lafayette County,” Mildred Quarles was an outspoken leader during the local struggle for the integration of public schools — brought to a head when she placed her own son’s name on the federal lawsuit filed against Oxford city schools in 1969. (March 16, 2010, Page 2A)

                  • Leonard “Doc” William Jenkins — 99, died Sunday, March 14, 2010. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Waller Funeral Home Chapel. A Private graveside will follow in Pine Crest Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
                  • Mildred McGhee Quarles — 79, died Saturday at her residence. Arrangements are incomplete with Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc.
                  • Patti Joy Sullivan Scott — 63, died Saturday, March 13, 2010. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at Waller Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
                  • Alta Mae East Welch — 90, died Saturday, March 13, 2010. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Oxford. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery, CR 429, Oxford. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
