  • Frederick Andrew Brown — formerly of Oxford, died Monday, March 15, 2010. Services will be held at 9 a.m. June 16 at Ft. Myer Chapel. Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Jefferson Funeral Chapel in Alexandria, Va.
  • Rev. John H. Ford — 87, of Water Valley died Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 2 this afternoon at First United Pentecostal Church in Water Valley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Seven Oaks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

    • Rubye Bunkley — 91, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010. A graveside service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
    • The Rev. John H. Ford —  90, died Wednesday. Arrangements are incomplete with Seven Oaks Funeral Home in Water Valley.
    • Mildred Quarles — 79, died Saturday, March 13, 2010.  Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jordan Chapel CME Church. Burial will be in Jordan Chapel Cemetery.       • William Van Brewer — 93, died Monday, March 15, 2010. Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Oxford. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 until 6 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
      • Ruby Bunkley — 91, died this morning at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North  Mississippi. Arrangements are incomplete with Waller Funeral Home.
      • Bonnie Chisholm Eakes — 92, died Monday, March 15, 2010. Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel in Philadelphia. Burial will follow in Cooks Chapel Cemetery in Neshoba County. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

        Integration leader dies at 79

        The woman who took the issue of Oxford schools’ integration to federal court died Saturday at her home in Oxford. Called “the Fannie Lou Hamer of Lafayette County,” Mildred Quarles was an outspoken leader during the local struggle for the integration of public schools — brought to a head when she placed her own son’s name on the federal lawsuit filed against Oxford city schools in 1969. (March 16, 2010, Page 2A)

          • William Montgomery Champion — 78, died Friday, March 12, 2010. Services were held this morning at Oxford-University United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
          • Kenneth Galmore — 39, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010. Services were held Saturday at the New Hope M.B. Church in Batesville. Burial followed at New Hope Cemetery. Serenity-Martin Funeral Home of Oxford was in charge of arrangements.
          • Leonard “Doc” William Jenkins — 99, died Sunday, March 14, 2010. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Waller Funeral Home Chapel. A Private graveside will follow in Pine Crest Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
          • Mildred McGhee Quarles — 79, died Saturday at her residence. Arrangements are incomplete with Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc.
          • Patti Joy Sullivan Scott — 63, died Saturday, March 13, 2010. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at Waller Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
          • Alta Mae East Welch — 90, died Saturday, March 13, 2010. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Oxford. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery, CR 429, Oxford. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Coleman Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

            • Carey “Pudding” Shantel McCollins — 31, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Services were held earlier today at Green Goshen C.M.E. Church in Water Valley. Burial followed at Green Goshen Cemetery. Serenity-Martin Funeral Home of Oxford was in charge.
            • Jacquelyn Mason Smith — 50, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Services were held Wednesday at the Serenity-Martin Funeral Chapel in Oxford. Burial followed at Brown Chapel Church Cemetery in Taylor. Serenity-Martin Funeral Home of Oxford was in charge.
