Groups aim to address homeless problem in Oxford

About 60 people from a range of agencies and interests attended a meeting held Sunday by the Oxford Homeless Task Force to address the growing homeless population in Oxford. Now they’re going to be working in committees aimed at six issues: awareness, fundraising, statistics, shelter needs, immediate response and governmental relations. (February 22, 2010, Page 1)

    What? This place is ‘weird’?

    A new group set up by the University Counseling Center aims to ease the transition to moving to a new place. It’s called the “This Place Can Be a Little Weird,” and group counselor Josh Magruder hopes to help new hires or people who may be transitioning into a new academic position. (February 5, 2010, Page 3A)

        Holocaust survivor to speak Feb. 8 at UM

        Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel shares his message of hope through dark and seemingly hopeless circumstances Feb. 8 at the University of Mississippi during the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College Spring Convocation.           A CONVERSATION WITH… — Visiting art professor Katherine Fields was featured recently as part of the Mississippi Public Broadcasting program “Southern Expressions.” The exposure led to her being asked by the Mississippi Museum of Art to donate a print as part of its permanent collection. (January 28, 2010, Page 3)

            UM to buy Campus Walk

            Campus Walk apartments may become student housing this fall for the University of Mississippi campus, as a two-stage purchase proposal is pending before the College Board. The state College Board is expected to approve the deal at its meeting this week in Jackson. The University of Mississippi Foundation will buy and lease the property to UM until March 2012. (January 20, 2010, Page 1)

              UM reschedules Grove Bowl

              Ultimately, University of Mississippi football coach Houston Nutt decided that scheduling three popular events on the same weekend was too much for the community to handle, so he decided this morning to move the date of the annual Grove Bowl. The new date has not yet been set. (January 13, 2010, Page 1)

                Officials to visit Washington DC

                Old Taylor Road roundabouts, a new fire station and community multipurpose building are a few of the capital items and improvements local government officials will discuss with the LOU area congressional representatives next month during a trip to Washington DC. (January 12, 2010, Page 1)
