Mascot search down to three
Voting opens on Wednesday at mascot.olemiss.edu for the final three mascot options for Ole Miss. The choices are down to a land shark, Hotty Toddy or a bear. Voting will only last six days and then a final decision will be made. (September 30, 2010, Page 1, 2)

UM Manufacturing Center receives grant
The University of Mississippi’s Center of Manufacturing Excellence received a grant recently from the Mississippi Development Authority for $529,395. UM will use this grant money for solar panels for the new center which is currently being built. (September 27, 2010, Page 1A)

Five to be inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame
Some athletes have passed through the halls of Ole Miss whose names will never be forgotten. Some of those unforgettable faces were the best of the best here at Ole Miss, and each year they are honored for their dedication to their sport and their school by being inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame.
This season, Deuce McAllister, Ansu Sesay, David Dellucci, Yolanda Moore and Jerry Montgomery are the five memorable individuals selected to be inducted into the M-Club Hall of Fame. Bobby Bailess is this year’s recipient of the M-Club Service Award. (September 24, 2010, Page 1B)
Caretakers soon to get well-deserved break
Details of a new nonprofit day program, Memory Makers, for victims of dementia were unveiled Tuesday during a ceremony at the University Museum in honor of World Alzheimer’s Day.
The respite care program will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays in the First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall. The cost is $20 a day.

UM ROTC cadet earns high honor
Army ROTC cadet Gabriel Weiss achieved what fewer than 50 cadets a year achieve when he was awarded the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement this summer.

United Way sets higher goal
The United Way scaled back its fundraising goal in 2008 in expectancy of lower donations due to a failing economy.
In 2007, the goal was $450,000. It was dropped to $425,000 in 2009.
“We blew it out the top, despite a tough economy, and raised $427,000,” campaign chairman Jeff Triplette said at the United Way annual campaign kick-off luncheon on Wednesday. “That was above our goal.”

Metro busts four for selling Spice
The Lafayette County Metro Narcotics United arrested three people recently for allegedly selling synthetic marijuana.
“We couldn’t have done this without the help of other area law enforcement agencies, particularly the University Police Department,” said Agent in Charge Keith Davis.
In the last two weeks, the Narcotics Unit, with the help of UPD officers, visited several local businesses suspected of selling the artificial marijuana, known by several brand names including K2, Spice, Demon, Voodoo, Genie and Zohai. The leafy material is marketed as an incense, although by smoking it, it is said to have similar effects to that of marijuana.
The UPD officers posed as undercover buyers at the establishments. According to Davis, three people were arrested for selling the now-illegal substance. (September 15, 2010, Page 2)
