OCVB incomes increase

After struggling financially for the past couple of years, the Oxford Conference Center is ending 2011 with a 32 percent increase in revenue, according to director Hollis Green. (December 7, 2011, Page 1)

    City, OFD crack down on 2 Square restaurants

    During a special meeting of the Oxford Board of Aldermen Monday, the board agreed to send a letter to three Square restaurants informing them that they need to either build a second exit or keep their capacity down to 49 or face sanctions for violating state fire codes. (December 7, 2011, Page 2)

      Farmers’ market idea on hold

      City officials agreed to hold off on the idea to build a pavilion for a new farmers’ market near the old National Guard Armory on University Avenue after Mid-Town Farmers’ Market board members and aldermen expressed concerns at a work session Monday afternoon. (December 6, 2011, Page 1)

        Cambridge resident shoots suspected burglar

        The Oxford Police Department is investigating a burglary that happened early this morning at Cambridge Station Apartments that left one suspect shot in the leg by a female when she returned home and found him in the apartment. OPD apprehended the suspect who is at the hospital being treated for his injuries. The second suspect is still at large. (December 2, 2011, Page 9A)

          City, county to take bids on silver bars Monday

          The Oxford Board of Aldermen and the Lafayette County Board of Supervisors hope to find the highest bidder on 40-plus bars of silver on Monday when verbal and written bids will be taken in a public forum at 1 p.m. at the Lafayette County Chancery Building. (December 2, 2011, Page 1A)

            More Faulkner movies in our future?

            Here’s some exciting news for fans of William Faulkner: David Milch’s Redboard Productions has entered into an agreement with the William Faulkner Literary Estate to produce films and television series based on Faulkner’s vast body of works. The deal, according to a news release issued this morning by the Bing Communications Group in Los Angeles, notes that the agreement covers all 19 novels and 125 short stories in the estate, “as well as other works, with the exception of those currently contracted with other parties.” (November 30, 2011)

                Shoppers buy local on Black Friday

                This year’s Holiday Open House, sponsored by the Oxford Downtown Council, offered shoppers loads of discounts at Square businesses as well as holiday events like visiting with Santa, making Christmas tree decorations or watching Oxford’s first official Christmas tree light up as carolers sang in the background. (November 28, 2011, Page 1A)

                    Oxford Police Department finishes Iron Cop 2011

                    The Oxford Police Department finished out its year-long fitness competition on Nov. 11 with the final event, “The Mountain Man” triathlon-styled event. Detective Jeff McCutchen took first place for the entire event with Officer James Owens taking first place in final event. (November 21, 2011, Page 6A)
