Some classes we like; others, well …

A previous column discussed classes, periods and subjects that most students seem to like. What about the other side – the ones that many students aren’t as excited about. Editor Don Whitten takes a look at two Top 10 lists, one of the hardest subjects and the other of the most boring subjects. (August 17, 2011, Page 4)

‘The Family Fang’ – an interesting debut novel

Looking for a late-summer read that’s light and humorous with a serious undertone? Or maybe something with a serious look at family dynamics that also contains comedy? Kevin Wilson’s debut novel, “The Family Fang,” can give you either approach – or both. Editor Don Whitten takes a closer look at Wilson’s work. (August 15, 2011, Page 4A)

The joys of Friday night high school football

There’s little better to enjoy than Friday night high school football. So says Assistant News Editor Jeff Eubanks, who’s been on hand for his share of games through the years. It’s time again for another season, and Eubanks lays out plans for 2012 while also taking a look at the past. (August 12, 2011, Page 4A)

For variety and good eatin’, consider Mr. Catfish

Perhaps you recall Bubba Blue telling Forrest Gump all the ways shrimp could be cooked and served. Shrimp has nothing on one of our local products – Mississippi pond-raised catfish – as Editor Don Whitten writes in a column about catching and eating the fish that’s being honored this month. (August 8, 2011, Page 4)

Movies are movies – but Cruise as Reacher?

Loyal readers of best-selling author Lee Child’s series featuring tough guy Jack Reacher must be a bit surprised to hear that Tom Cruise has been picked to play the character in an upcoming movie based on one of the books. Editor Don Whitten says he can’t picture the 5-foot-7 Cruise as the 6-5, 250-pound Reacher he’s been following in Child’s books. (August 5, 2011, Page 4A)

It’s not just the heat, it’s the apprehension

Is, as T.S. Eliot wrote, April the cruelest month. News Editor Jonathan Scott suggests it might actually be August because of all involved with starting school again. He takes a look at the concerns that parents have to help their children from pre-K through seniors in high school deal with this month every year. (August 4, 2011, Page 4)

School days can combine fun, education

With open houses this week and classes beginning Thursday for most local students, Don Whitten takes a look at the “fun” parts of school – recess, lunch and activity period – and how they play a key role in the education process. (August 3, 2011, Page 4)

All running for office deserve our thanks

Perhaps you have your Election Day schedule all planned out. Before, or after, voting, there’s one more thing that Editor Don Whitten says you should think about doing – thank all of the candidates for running and making the election process work. (August 1, 2011, Page 4A)

                  Whose personhood?

Staff Writer Melanie Addington takes a closer look at the personhood initiative, Amendment 26, that is expected to be on the ballot in Mississippi in November. She cites statistics about serious issues in our state and asks if those issues need to be dealt with more than personhood. (July 29, 2011, Page 4A)

Lots of ‘summer reading’ going on these days

Notice more folks around the book stores and library? How about fewer youngsters outside? Many of them, Editor Don Whitten suspects, are working on summer reading lists and projects as the days count down until the beginning of school. (July 27, 2011, Page 4A)
