The Christmas gift that keeps giving

Remember Peggy – the dog that came home after being missing for several years? News Editor Jonathan Scott has been asked about the wirehaired terrier numerous times since relating that story a year ago, and today he updates all of those concerned on Peggy’s progress in the Scott home. (December 10, 2010, Page 4A)

Too much of a good thing isn’t so good

It’s sobering to think that at some point in our lifetimes, a dear friend might turn on us some day. Local columnist Deidra Jackson talks about some of those friends – holiday food and drink – and how she’s dealing with them. (December 9, 2010, Page 4)

Bikers need to follow rules of the road, too

Local columnist T.J. Ray writes that some of the biggest challenges to driving locally are not other cars, but actually people riding bicycles. He wonders about rules of the road and insurance as cyclists take their spots on the roadways. (December 9, 2010, Page 4)

We’ll still be paying – just at a different level

Editor Don Whitten suggests a new political-oriented phrase for the times of today: “Politics sends trickle-down taxes to the locals.” He notes that it seems more and more like the taxes and fees are being passed down the line where they still have to be paid if we’re to receive services and benefits. (December 8, 2010, Page 4)

              Thankfulness

The Christmas holidays are a time, if there is any during the year, when we need to be thankful for all we have in our country. Local columnist Jimmy Reed points out that today’s date (the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the U.S. entrance into World War II) and Christmas mark notable times in our country’s history and in it becoming the nation it is today, and urges all of us to keep an attitude of thankfulness. (December 7, 2010, Page 4)

Weekend offers lots of arts, crafts sales

Last weekend included Christmas Open House on the Oxford Square and Black Friday shopping everywhere, while “Cyber Monday” was earlier this week. From the looks of events scheduled for this weekend, you might call it “arts and crafts weekend” around the Lafayette-Oxford-University community. Editor Don Whitten mentions some of the places to visit this weekend and talks about the importance of shopping locally. (December 3, 2010, Page 4A)
