‘My angel, my lifesaver’

Derald  Connell was known to most as just Pete. Some called him Peter Cotton Tail. To his grandchildren, he was Pa Paw.
Mandy Martin has her own names for the 69-year-old Connell, who was beaten to death April 1.
“He was my angel,” she said. “My lifesaver.” (April 13, 2010, Page 1A)

    Green ends fires

    As fields and forests green up with the arrival of spring, wildfire season is winding down in Lafayette County. The Mississippi Forestry Commission was called out to about six or seven wildfires in the county during the month of March, and Lafayette County volunteer firefighters battled a few more on their own. (April 13, 2010, Page 1A)

        Castle Hill expands restaurant

        Under new ownership, the Castle Hill Resort and Club will offer the same contemporary southern fine dining in its restaurant as well as opening its doors to its bed and breakfast guest rooms. It will continue to be a destination wedding spot, hosting large or quaint weddings for people all over the state. (April 12, 2010, Page 6A)

          Wife given bond in husband’s murder

          Justice Court Judge Mickey Avent granted Lou Ann White with a $100,000 bond during her first-appearance hearing Thursday afternoon; she had not posted bond as of this morning. (April 9, 2010, Page 2A)

            Wife charged in death

            Henry White, 60, was found at his Highway 7 South home with multiple and extensive wounds all over his body, according to Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy. He was dead by the time deputies arrived at about 1:30 p.m. His wife, Lou Ann White has been charged with his murder. (April 8, 2010, Page 1)

              Boys & Girls Club launches new campaign

              The Boys & Girls Clubs of North Mississippi are asking corporations to step up and make donations to the organization to help keep young children from left home alone and walking the streets after school. (April 8, 2010, Page 5)

                MDOT projects moving forward

                Work to replace three bridges in Lafayette County is about 50 percent complete, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The bridges, all located on Highway 331 in the Tula area, are being replaced by Talbot Brothers Construction and Grading of Nesbit. (April 7, 2010, Page 2)

                  County, builder dispute ongoing

                  The Lafayette County Supervisors were brought up to date at Monday’s meeting in regard to an ongoing dispute between the county and developer James E. Davis in regard to a T-shaped road inside the University Heights subdivision. (April 6, 2010, Page 1)

                    Man beaten to death

                    The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the murder of a 69-year-old man who was allegedly beaten to death in the county at about 9 p.m. Thursday.
                    Derald “Pete” Connell, 69, died from injuries he received from an assault that took place off Highway 6 East, in the area of the county near the Brittany Woods subdivision, Investigator Scott Mills said. (April 5, 2010, Page 1A)
