The rivalry between the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University is in full swing this month, although this time the two universities won’t be competing for an Egg Bowl trophy. Instead, they will be competing to see who can raise the most money to help cure cancer. Since Thursday, Lafayette County Volunteer Fire Chief Larry McKinney has lost count on the exact numbers of brush, wood and tree fires in the county.

A Friday afternoon wreck involving an all-terrain vehicle has left a father and his teenage daughter fighting for their lives.

The race for Third District Circuit Court is heating up with three more attorneys qualifying for the November election: John A. Gregory, Dave Rozier and Kent A. Smith. Local voters will decide who will get a judicial seat in the Third District Circuit Court, which covers seven counties — Lafayette, Benton, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Marshall, Tippah and Union. A new city hall and several new businesses are bringing a mini-boom to downtown Abbeville. Yocona in Exile and Abbeville Grill are giving the 450 citizens of the town north of Oxford a place to gather and eat.
