    Local dropout, grad rates better than most

    The Oxford and Lafayette County school district dropout rates are better than most in Mississippi. After a slight decline in the past few years both school districts want to see graduation rates improve. Keeping dropout numbers in mind, both districts are making plans to lower dropout rates among students by keeping them engaged in school studies and activites. (July 9, 2010, Page 1A)

      Oxford School Board gets advice on bond issue

      Bond issue survey results are in…. During a special Oxford school board meeting hired consultant Dan C. Davis explained the results of 301 surveys that were taken and said he believed that voters would be in favor of the bond. (July 7, 2010, Page 1)

        Martin excited about position

        Phillip Martin will have large shoes to fill as he takes the job as Lafayette High School band director. Former directors Beverly and Kevin Cole retired this spring from their joint position at the school. (July 6, 2010, Page 1B)

              City schools OK budget

              The Oxford School District has approved the budget for the 2010-2011 school year. Eventhough the budge is about $400,000 more than last years budget the district expects to receive less money from the state. The shortfall in state funds is being made up by an increase in federal dollars generated by taxes collected in the community. (June 29, 2010, Page 1)

                University High School 2010 grand reunion

                This weekend is the seventh grand reunion for the Oxford kids who attended University High School. This includes the classes from 1930 to 1967 who attended high school in the building built in 1929 on University Avenue just before you reach the Hilgard Cut on the University of Mississippi campus. (June 25, 2010, Page 2B)

                  Oxford mourns loss of community leader

                  From his work as a civil rights activist, who was instrumental in integrating Oxford public schools, to working with felons as a U.S. probation officer, to serving as a Lafayette County Planning Commissioner, Leonard Thompson’s death Monday has been called a major loss for the community as a whole.
                  Thompson died Monday at about 10:30 a.m. after going into anaphylactic shock when he was stung by a wasp while putting his lawnmower up in his garage at his Highway 334 home. (June 23, 2010, Page 1A)
