Class to teach naturalization process
The U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services will offer a class to legal, permanent residents on the ins and outs of how to become a U.S. citizen. The two-hour class, which will be taught in English, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Lafayette County & Oxford Public Library and will be free to all those interested in attending. Regents School of Oxford has hired a consultant to help improve its academic curriculum. James Daniels, director of academic consulting with Classical School Foundation in Midlothian, Va., has been hired as academic dean for the 2010-11 school year. (March 9, 2010, Page 7)

As Mississippi House and Senate negotiators were agreeing on a plan to restore $82 million in cuts made to the current state budget, Lafayette County School Board members were voting on whether to accept next year’s school calendar, fearing budget cuts could force student and teacher furloughs. As Medicaid makes more cuts and medical care becomes increasingly more expensive for families, school nurses are finding themselves being the primary-care provider for many of Lafayette County’s students. During the Lafayette County School Board meeting Tuesday, school nurse Celia Roberts said she and fellow nurses are also dealing with mental illness in students in numbers they never did in years past.
