OHS among top 6 percent in nation

Oxford High School was again rated one of the top schools in the nation in Newsweek magazine’s annual list of America’s Best High Schools. The school ranked higher this year, moving up from 1,300 to 1,112.

    No tax hike needed to fund Oxford School District budget

    Oxford residents will not be hit with a tax increase to fund city schools. At a public hearing Monday on the proposed budget for the next school year, the board discussed the possibility of what sort of revenue the district could generate if a 4 percent tax hike was approved. But the board was adamant about not raising taxes. (June 15, 2010, Page 2)

      First Lady writes OHS Class of 2010

      First Lady Michelle Obama wished the Oxford High School Class of 2010 well in a letter addressed to recent graduate Cathy Chen after Chen launched an effort to invite the president and Mrs. Obama to the school to speak to the graduating class. (June 15, 2010, Page 5)

          Grads say goodbye

          The graduates of Lafayette and Oxford high schools celebrated over the weekend as their journey through grade school came to a close.
          Both graduation ceremonies were held at  C.M. “Tad” Coliseum on the University of Mississippi campus; Lafayette ’s was held Friday night and Oxford’s was on Saturday afternoon. (May 24, 2010, Page 1A)

            Class of 2010: Graduation

            Lafayette, Oxford and Water Valley high schools will graduate their Classes of 2010 this week. In honor of the special accomplishments of each school’s graduates, The EAGLE’s annual graduation section shares the awards and scholarships of each class.

                City schools: no job cuts

                Despite continued budget cuts from the state last year, the Oxford School District has put together a budget for the coming school year that calls for no job cuts. The district also does not intend to raise taxes. (May 18, 2010, Page 1, 3)

                  Students celebrate school’s end

                  Oxford High School’s 200 seniors spent the day in the sun enjoying games and a cookout as a celebration of their senior year the day before final exams begin for many. School officials say the event was to do something fun for seniors, but also help cut down on school pranks. (May 12, 2010, Page 1)

                    Parents play role in student testing

                    From Tuesday through Thursday, students in the third through eighth grades at Oxford and Lafayette public schools will be taking the Mississippi Curriculum Test Second Edition or MCT2. School principals and the Office of Healthy Schools in the Mississippi Department of Education share ideas to help students prepare. (May 10, 2010, Page 1A)
