County schools keep growing
The number of students attending Lafayette County schools continues to grow, Superintendent Mike Foster said.
Foster reported the early enrollment numbers Tuesday to the members of the Lafayette County School Board. The report notes the district has 65 more students this year compared to last school year. (September 8, 2010, Page 1)

Child left behind on bus
For one mother, her 8-year-old son’s safety was the first thought after he was left on the bus in a parking lot and then walked into school on his own.
Lafayette School District Mike Foster is unaware of a similar incident occurring at Lafayette schools in the past, but was aware of a similar incident in another district in the past. (August 23, 2010, Page 1A)
Test results show progress
Local schools, Lafayette County, Oxford and Water Valley school districts are well above the state percentage of passing scores in most testing areas. But all three districts along with all other districts in the state continue to struggle with reading scores. Statewide results were released today. LHS cruises to 3-0 win over Corinth
A fast start led by senior leader Squirt Hunt and well rounded play from a bevy of players proved to be two pivotal reasons why the Lafayette Lady Commodore volleyball team defeated Corinth 3-0 Thursday night in the LHS gym.
LHS, which beat Corinth 25-8, 25-18 and 25-19, earned its first win on the season thanks to some great serving by Hunt, powerful kills by Shaquilla Isom and some overall good defense led by libero Charlotte Rafnson. A key timeout in the third set by assistant coach Cathy Worley also made a difference in the win for the Lady ‘Dores. (August 20, 2010, Page 7A)
LLES top school for Box-Tops
Cutting out a Box-Tops only takes a minute, but so many parents tend to forget what an impact it can make on local schools. Lafayette Lower Elementary School didn’t forget. LLES students and their parents diligently cut out Box-Tops tand their efforts resulted the school bringing in nearly $4,000 in Box Tops money.
“We are extremely excited about this for our school,” LLES PTO Co-president Brandall Atkinson said. “We are challenging the Upper Elementary to a Box Top battle this year to see which school can raise the most money.” (August 17, 2010, Page 5)
County school budget approved
The Lafayette County School Board approved Monday a $20 million budget for the 2010-2011 school year. Despite an almost $3 million deficit compared to this past school year’s budget, county school leders intend to hold the line on taxes and operate with the available revenues. Building a solid foundation
A United Way committee is looking at ways to improve early childhood education in Oxford and Lafayette County. Accessibility to free or affordable preschools for all Lafayette County children is one area the committee is examining.
