      Ready for the great shake?

      After a day filled with storms and tornado warnings, students in Lafayette County School District will be learning what to do in case of another type of natural disaster Thursday morning.

      At 10:15 a.m., students will be practicing the “Drop, Cover and Hold On,” in case of an earthquake during the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut.

            Local students show patriotism in essay contest

            The Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and local veteran organizations  honored the winners in this year’s Voice of Democracy Speech competition for high school students and the Patriot’s Pen Essay contest for middle school students Tuesday night at an awards ceremony. (February 9, 2011, Page 2)

              Local youth honored for strong character

              Two local teens were awarded Youth Character Awards during the Lafayette County Law Enforcement Officers Association’s annual awards banquet last night at the National Guard Armory. Receiving the awards were Mikayla Patterson, 13, and eighth-grader and Lafayette Middle School and Robert Liggins, 17, a junior at Oxford High School. (January 26, 2011, Page 2)

                Parents: Details needed on block schedule

                Several parents expressed their concerns Tuesday with Lafayette High School officials considering implementing a four-by-four block schedule next school year.

                Lafayette County School Board officials were present at the meeting held at the Lafayette Middle School to hear the parents’ reactions and questions about the new class scheduling system.

                  Is snow headed our way?

                  City and county crews are gearing up to prepare for what could be the worst snow storm since 1988, according to the National Weather Service..

                  Snow is expected to move into the area around Sunday afternoon, with it getting increasingly heavy after 6 p.m., said meteorologist Ryan Husted with the National Weather Service. About 3 to 5 inches of snow are expected, however, Husted said if snow bands settle on top of Oxford, more than 6 inches could fall in the LOU area. (January 7, 2011, Page 1A)

                    LHS win gets ringing endorsement

                    With over $11,000 raised of the $20,000 needed to buy the Lafayette High School All-State champs their winning rings, Lafayette School District Athletic Director Jeff Nelson said he is thankful for how the entire community has come together to help celebrate these students. (January 4, 2011, Page 1)
