Online subscription program underway

Beginning April 1, we transitioned from the free-access period of our new e-edition into a paid online subscription pilot program. Readers will be able to sign up for $5 per month to get the entire day’s paper — just as it appeared in print. The online subscription also includes access to the past 30 days’ edition.

    Wife charged in death

    Henry White, 60, was found at his Highway 7 South home with multiple and extensive wounds all over his body, according to Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy. He was dead by the time deputies arrived at about 1:30 p.m. His wife, Lou Ann White has been charged with his murder. (April 8, 2010, Page 1)

      Chancellor Inauguration

      An investiture ceremony for the 16th Chancellor Dan Jones on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts will be the centerpiece of what has been a week-long observance of community service.
      While the event is not open to the general public, the show will be broadcast on channel 99 for MetroCast cable TV subscribers and rebroadcast at 9 p.m. on Mississippi Public Broadcasting.

        New road construction ahead

        Several road projects that have been in the works can now move forward with construction bids after the Board of Aldermen approved the request from city engineers on Tuesday. Along with the projects, several roads in town will begin construction shortly.
        The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has authorized the expenditure of $1.2 million in federal stimulus dollars to fund milling and overlay work in the city of Oxford.
        The bid was approved for Lehman-Roberts Company to mill and overlay multiple Oxford streets, including: Jackson Avenue, from west of Oxford Mall to east of Rebel Drive; Old Taylor Road, from University Place to South Lamar; Old Taylor Road, from Kitchen Aid to Bickerstaff and Belk Drive, from Medical Park to Burney Branch.

          Race weekend coming up

          Oxford Endurance Weekend, scheduled for Aug. 13-15, will feature the Faulkner 5K, the Tri-Oxford triathlon, a 20K Race of Truth time-trial bike race, a criterium around the Square and a road race in Taylor. (April 7, 2010, Page 1)

            County schools prepare for cuts

            The Lafayette County School District voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a Staff Reduction in Force policy that outlines how the district should handle any wide-spread layoffs of licensed employees in the district. (April 7, 2010, Page 1)

              Work can begin on Cedar Oaks

              The city of Oxford can move forward in making necessary repairs and coming up with marketing plans for the Cedar Oaks Heritage House, after it officially became city property Tuesday afternoon. (April 7, 2010, Page 1)

                Four held in murder

                Three men – Willie Anthony Canon, 24; Justin Eugene Montez, 25; and Adam Corey Ferguson, 20 – and one woman – Kasie Lynn Jones, 20 – have been arrested in connection with the Thursday beating death of Derald “Pete” Connell. The men were charged with capital murder and Jones was charted with accessory after the fact of capital murder. (April 6, 2010, Page 1)

                  County, builder dispute ongoing

                  The Lafayette County Supervisors were brought up to date at Monday’s meeting in regard to an ongoing dispute between the county and developer James E. Davis in regard to a T-shaped road inside the University Heights subdivision. (April 6, 2010, Page 1)

                    Man beaten to death

                    The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the murder of a 69-year-old man who was allegedly beaten to death in the county at about 9 p.m. Thursday.
                    Derald “Pete” Connell, 69, died from injuries he received from an assault that took place off Highway 6 East, in the area of the county near the Brittany Woods subdivision, Investigator Scott Mills said. (April 5, 2010, Page 1A)
